HILDRETH HERITAGE -
Southeast Alabama

Dedicated to the memory of Armorita Nell Hildreth Gilchrist

Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth brought his family from South Carolina to Dale County in southeast Alabama about 1830. The information on this page represents the direct descendancy of Morgan Bascom Hildreth from Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth. In 1989, James Wilson Newman Sr. and William Alton Newman Sr. authored a book called The Hildreth Family. In it are only brief references to Rev. Travis Zaccheus Hildreth, a son of Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth, and his offspring. The primary focus of the Newman book are the descendents of Rev. Robert Henry Jackson Hildreth, a younger son of Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth. This page will hopefully provide a partial supplement the Newman book. Every effort is made to be as accurate as possible, but there may be errors. If you can help correct errors or supply missing information, I would love hearing from you! Please check back for corrections and updates.

1st Generation

Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth

Benjamin Griswold Hildreth was born about March 15, 1802 in Charleston, South Carolina, and baptized on April 10, 1803 at the Independent Congregational (Circular) Church, Charleston, South Carolina (alternate link), as the son of Benjamin and Mary Hildreth (per Newman & Newman, The Hildreth Family, page 8.) On March 28, 1811, at the age of eight, he was admitted to the Charleston Orphan House by his mother Mary [Groshen]. According to Newman & Newman, Benjamin Hildreth of Charleston had probably died and his wife Mary had probably remarried. On August 10, 1815 (per e-mail from A. Templeton), Benjamin G. Hildreth was indentured to Elizabeth McBride as an umbrella maker with the indenture expiring March 18, 1824 (per Newman & Newman, page 9.) According to Newman & Newman, Elizabeth McBride was Benjamin G. Hildreth's aunt.
Benjamin G. Hildreth married Jemima Dowling 1823 in Darlington District, South Carolina, daughter of John Dowling and Nancy Boutwell. She was born March 01, 1807 in Jeffries Creek, Darlington District, South Carolina. (The ancestry of the Dowling Family of Southeast Alabama has been well-chronicled at Southern-Style.)
In 1829, Benjamin & Jemima Hildreth, along with several other relatives, sold land in Darlington County, South Carolina (per Newman & Newman, The Hildreth Family, page 10.) It is apparent the family moved to Alabama about this time since Benjamin Hildreth is listed on the 1830 Dale County, Alabama census.
Benjamin Hildreth is listed as "Benjamin Hildridge" on the roll of soldiers for the Creek War, which took place in 1836-37, as a member of Arch Justice's Company of Wellborn's Alabama Mounted Volunteers (per K. Parker e-mail of 24 July 2001 referencing records in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.)
On September 20, 1839, and July 1, 1841, Benjamin Hildreth obtained patents for two parcels of land of about 40 acres each in Dale County, Alabama. (Images of the land patent documents can be seen by conducting a search at The Bureau of Land Management web site.) The area of Dale County in which these parcels of land were located became part of the newly created Coffee County in December, 1841. On December 10, 1841, Benjamin Hildreth obtained patents for two additional parcels of land of approximately 40 acres each in Coffee County, Alabama. (Duke Vickery, on his web site South of the Road has mapped the townships and ranges of Dale and Coffee Counties and prepared an index of patentees to make it easier to see where exactly these parcels were located. All four of these parcels of land now make up part of the Fort Rucker Army Aviation Center.)
Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth served as a Methodist Circuit-Rider (a minister of early Methodism who was appointed by his bishop to be responsible for caring for one or more local churches and starting new churches within a circuit) and farmed. Sometime after 1860, he moved to Greenville, Butler County, Alabama.
Rev. Benjamin Griswold Hildreth died November 26, 1868 in Greenville, Butler County, Alabama and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Greenville, Butler County, Alabama. Jemima Dowling Hildreth died February 08, 1891 in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama and is buried in Old Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery, Coffee County, Alabama.

Jemima Dowling Hildreth's obituary, written by her grand-nephew Angus Dowling, which appeared in the Methodist Advocate, February 1891. The portion of that obituary reprinted in The Hildreth Family, Newman & Newman, page 16, follows.

"Jemima Hildreth was born in Darlington District, South Carolina, March 1st, 1807. She was the daughter of John and Nancy Dowling, who was a noted class leader for many years in that section. She was a sister of Rev. Zaccheus Dowling, long a member of the Alabama Conference. Her mother was noted for sweet and steady piety. Under such parental example and teaching her character was formed, which became the legacy of her whole pure life. At an early age she professed saving grace and joined the Methodist Church. In the sixteenth year of her life she married Benjamin Hildreth, whose early training was like hers. He became a local Methodist preacher. Early in 1830 they moved to Alabama and settled in Dale County near Ozark. He was an earnest and successful worker in planting Methodism in southeast Alabama. He died and was buried in the Greenville Pioneer Cemetery, Alabama, about the close of the war. After the death of her husband, she made her home with her youngest son, Rev. Robert Henry Jackson Hildreth. Early last year he moved to Coffee County, Alabama. At this new home she closed her earthly pilgrimage, at 7 o'clock, Sunday Morning, February 8th, 1891, age 83 years, 11 months, 7 days. Up to within a few days of her death she was remarkably well preserved in body and mind."

Mr. Emmett Cox of the Pea River Historical Society, Alabama, researched and found this additional portion to the "Eulogy of Jemima Dowling Hildreth."

"Religion was her chief concern and formed the staple of her daily conversation. She never neglected secret prayer, and never allowed family prayer to be omitted. She was fully ready for death and heaven.

"She was the mother of thirteen children, nine of whom still live. Two sons, Reverends Travis HILDRETH and Jackson HILDRETH, are local preachers. Up to the time of her death seventy grandchildren and 100 greatgrandchildren had been born. Most of these, of proper age, are members of the church. One grandson is a preacher in Texas. Her name and influence go down to the last generations. This will constitute her monument of earth and her rejoicing through the endless ages of eternity.

"In her last moments she received the ministrations of her preacher sons and others of her children and grandchildren.

"She was buried at Carmichael's Chapel (now Enterprise City Cemetery), Coffee County, [Alabama] where she awaits the trump of God in the resurrection morn."

Rev. Travis Zaccheus Hildreth

Travis Zaccheus Hildreth was born December 30, 1830 in Daleville, Dale County, Alabama. He married first Quincy Ann Edge. He married second Elizabeth Samantha Hays about 1853 in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama, daughter of Farmer Hays and Mary __?__. She was born March 24, 1837 in Stewart County, Georgia.
Rev. Travis Z. Hildreth was a Methodist Circuit-Rider as his father had been before him. When Old Tabernacle Methodist Church was established in 1858, he was one of the charter members. He served as the pastor of Old Tabernacle for forty years. According to a narrative written by Marion Bailey Brunson in his book Pea River Reflections, Rev. Travis Z. Hildreth would not accept any payment for his services as the pastor of the church, but instead earned his living as a farmer.
On 1 December 1851, Travis Z. Hildreth obtained a land patent of about 40 acres in Coffee County, Alabama, Township 6-N, Range 22-E, Section 36, which is exactly the same area in which his father obtained a patent about 10 days later. On 1 September 1858, Travis Z. Hildreth obtained two land patents, one of about 40 acres in Coffee County, Alabama, Township 5-N, Range 22-E, Section 1, and the other of about 280 acres in Geneva County, Alabama, Township 2-N, Range 23-E, Section 34.
