WWE claims that him using that name would lead fans to believe that any "Sean Michaels" merchandise, which would be of the adult nature, is authorized by WWE. WWE feels that the two similar names will create confusion. Sean Michaels is arguing that he's been using that name for himself and his business since 1986, while Shawn Michaels, according to Sean and AVN Publications, has only been wrestling under his name since 1988. Thus, Sean Michaels has had his for a longer period of time. Basically, it comes down to the fact that Shawn Michaels' name has never been trademarked, whereas Sean Michaels did trademark his name a few years ago. WWE attorneys were startled to realize this and extended the deadline for Sean Michaels' argument. Sean Michaels offered this to AVN publications, "Let me do my job and I'll let you do yours. I want people to know that I mind my business, I just do my job and am a happy go lucky guy most of the time but don't f*ck with me because, you know what? I'll finish it."
