Veteran's Day

A day to reflect on the contributions of those that have fought for our country.

Indian Summer is officially over! The skies tonight are mostly clear and there is definitely a chill in the air. There was a lovely sunset this evening, though. The sky was pink. I was able to witness this all first hand, without my camera though, because I accidentally locked myself out of the house. Yes, I'm embarassed to admit it, but I managed to lock myself outdoors, with no way in about 3:00 this afternoon.

It's ironic, that I had originally taken today off as a vacation day, to run errands and take care of things that are impossible to do from work. I realized too late that places I intended to go to or call, like DMV, the post office, the bank, and the county Child Support Enforcement office, were closed today. I considered going into work, and saying, "surprise, I'm here!", but decided to just enjoy the day instead. The cat was happy that someone was home, and the rabbit was happy that she could be out of her cage during the day. I made some phone calls, did some research on the web, and basically didn't do much of anything. (some vacation, eh?)

About 3:00, I was just starting to work on making beef stew from last night's pot roast leftovers, and make oatmeal cookies. The cat was meowing to go outdoors, so I stepped outside to get her leash. (We let her out when the weather is good, on a 20 foot leash.) She tried to slip out with me, so I slammed the door shut. Guess what? The door was locked! So was the front door, and all the windows. Ironically, I had just shut the couple of windows that I had open earlier.

I spent some time trying all the windows, and jimmying with the door locks. Either our house is burglar-proof, or I'm no thief. (Hopefully, both are true!) Fortunately, I didn't have the stove or oven on yet, but I did have a candle buring in the living room. The cat followed me around to all the windows, and I could hear her meowing. (I'm not sure if she was trying to say, "Hey, I want to be outdoors too!" or, "You should have taught me how to open the door!" (LOL)

I figured that John would be home a little after 5, so I puttered around in the garage, noted where the Christmas stuff was, found an ice scraper (I'll need this soon!), and just tried to make the time go by faster. After 5, when the sun went down, it started getting very cold. It was creepy in the garage, (no lights, no heat) so I went back on my mission of trying to find a way in. I could see a rack of coats through the laundry room window, but couldn't get to them. Fortunately, the temperatures weren't down to freezing, but I felt like I was freezing. Brrrrrrrrr!

One of the stray cats came looking for food, and starting meowing repeatedly. She followed me around to the front porch, where I tried to sit and wait for John to come home. I had one cat meowing for food, my cat meowing from the window, for me to come into the house, and I was freezing, and by 6:00 I realized I hadn't eaten anything all day, and I was hungry! The only neighbor that was home had his girlfriend over and the lights out, so I didn't think it was a good idea at this point to go to his door. I thought of the blanket, candle in a tin can, and hand warmers that I had put in my car the other day to prepare for emergencies. Then I thought of my car keys, which were nice and warm in the house. (sigh!)

I tried to keep warm by pacing. Ironically, this same thing had happened to John just over a week ago. I had accidentally left his house keys sitting on the kitchen table, and he drove me to meet Terry to go to the Bill's game last week. Fortunately for him, he had been able to jimmy the bathroom window open, and climb in. Unfortunately for me, he had made sure all the windows were secure after that incident.

Finally, about 6:30, John pulled in the driveway. I ran up to him and said, "keys, please". He couldn't believe this had happened again. Finally, nice and warm inside, I finished making the cookies and baked them, while John finished making what was supposed to be stew into beef vegetable soup. A perfect way to warm up! Lesson learned: Never close a door w/o making sure you have your key first!

On a side note, I still don't feel comfortable with the name I've chosen for my rabbit. After going a few days of calling her "Smokey", while my husband is still calling her "BunBun", it still doesn't seem fitting. My latest idea for a name is "Stormy". (The poor rabbit might end up having an identity crisis!!!!) ;)
