Chapter Eight

The ride back to the house started out a quiet one. That didn't last more than a couple blocks. The stress from recent events had left them feeling very much out of their depth. It led to some very heated words being thrown around like some kind of hot rock.

Sitting in the last row of seats with her baby sister's head cradled in her lap Martina was strangely silent, which under normal circumstances would have been a flashing neon sign of impending disaster. Yet the others were so wrapped in their verbal sparring that they missed all the little things that would have nipped this issue in the bud.

Finally the brunette had as much of the bickering and fighting as she could take. “Enough,” Marti yelled from the back immediately quelling the arguments. “Pull the car over,” she ordered.

Paige took one look at the young woman in the rear view mirror and knew better than to argue. She carefully changed lanes hitting the emergency flashers. She turned off the engine, quietly waiting for the fall out that was sure to come.

For a time the only sounds within the vehicle were the breathing of the girls and the ticks and pings of a cooling engine. The tension was a palpable thing that was slowly choking them all. The three young women watched the oldest Williams girl as she collected herself.

Martina took a deep breath releasing it slowly, then another before she felt calm enough to address the girls she considered family. Absently she stroked her sister's dark hair as if assuring herself that Mya was still among them. “I have had enough of this asinine bullshit,” she began looking at each young woman in turn. “Everyone shut the fuck up! If that proves too difficult for you you're free to get out and walk.”

The other girls gapped at Marti truly surprised by her outburst. In their experience she was usually the most level headed individual. It didn't matter how stressful the situation she could usually be counted on to remain objective.

The brunette stared back at their stunned faces feeling little sympathy for them. As much as she may love each and every one of them they were not her blood. Mya's lifeless form was what concerned her the most. If it wasn't for the deep even breaths that her sister expelled the older girl wouldn't even know that her sibling lived.

In some distant corner of her mind she realized that she was being unduly harsh. She acknowledged that later she would most likely have to apologize. It was something that she hated to do because it meant she was wrong and who in their right mind liked to admit that?

“Mya's gonna be okay. You know that right,” Paige questioned gently turning to look at the oldest Williams girl. She asked more to gauge the other woman's emotional state than as a reassurance.

“I don't know that! All I know is that tonight we saw things that we thought were impossible! This may be par for the course for you and I won't speak for the others but I'm seriously freaked out here! My baby sister is in some kind of mystic sleep that I'm not sure she'll ever wake from,” the longer Martina talked the louder she got until the last words were a screech.

Laney gave the hysterical young woman wide blue eyes. “But Marti, you saw the same thing we did. If that young man had meant to hurt her he would have had ample opportunity to do so when she grabbed him.”

“And that's another thing,” Martina bit out. “What the fuck are we dealing with here Paige and how much worse is it going to get?” Her sapphire eyes were like hard chips of ice. The girls had seen that look only one other time in their short acquaintance.

It had been shortly after the five of them had moved into their little house. The neighbors had taken one look at the group of young women and immediately started tactics to get the girls to leave. The first had been a nasty note left in their mailbox. Next had been rocks and other bits of debris thrown at the house. Each time the girls had phoned the authorities the responding officers had been less than sympathetic. Even having a copy of each and every police report filed had little to no effect on their determined neighbors.

The last straw had been when Laney had come home to the words, “Dykes get out!” scrawled across the whitewashed face of the building. That night Martina had sought some good old fashioned justice of her own. She had taken a Louisville slugger to the headlights of all the surrounding cars, smashing the windshields of the more vocal of their neighbors. She had finally brought out gallons of acetone pouring it over every vehicle. Lest these people think it had been some random act of vandalism she had left a signed note on each car.

In the morning when the neighbors had converged on their doorstep she had answered with a shotgun cradled in her arms. In a tone that would have made even the most hardened criminals think twice she had informed the gathered crowd that they weren't going anywhere.

The group had grown silent at that. She stared back at them unrepentant about her actions. One loud brass young man had said he was going to report her to the authorities. The laugh she let out at that caused uneasy murmurs to run through the vigilante mob.

“Please do,” she encouraged them. “Because then we can show them just which one of you idiots defaced our property.” She pointed to the corner of the porch where a black glass globe gleamed in the early morning light then to the corner of the garage where another onyx orb hung. “Ladies and gentlemen, you are looking at our video surveillance system. It's the same one that caught you defacing our property.”

Martina shifted the shotgun from one arm to the other. Gasps were heard through the crowd at that slight action. “The only thing we want is to be left alone to live our lives. If you bring more trouble to our door we will bury you.” She pumped a round into the chamber lifting the gun to her shoulder aiming into the crowd. “Do you understand me,” she asked, looking for all the world like an avenging angel.

The crowd must have sensed just how serious she was as they all quickly agreed almost fleeing their property. The following days were tense as the girls waited to see if any of their neighbors would call the cops. When it became apparent that they weren't going to the women breathed a little easier.

After that confrontation she had been horrified by her actions. She had taken an oath to save and protect people; it might only have been to herself but it mattered...a great deal. It had taken a great deal of time before she felt comfortable enough to leave the house for more than work. Still in the back of her mind was the worry that she might once again snap like that.

Marti liked to think she was pretty easy going but there was only so far one could push her before she lost control. Mya liked to say that she was passive aggressive. The younger girl could often be heard saying that the only reason Martina went along was because it was something she wanted to do. However the moment that what the others wanted didn't mesh with her goals she would go her own way. The older Williams girl wasn't likely to make a big show of it just encourage the others to do what they would without being a party to it.

She had thought that she had put the genie back in the bottle but tonight brought those feeling right back to the surface only there was no one to take those emotions out on. With her free hand Martina reached up and scrubbed at her face. Tears pricked the backs of her eyes as she watched the still form of her younger sister.

The engine being started again brought the brunette out of her trance. Looking up she met the worried eyes of the other three women she shared her life and home with. Swallowing down the thick lump of emotion lodged at the back of her throat she spoke quietly, “I'm sorry.”

It didn't have to be said because everyone knew she wasn't just talking about zoning out. It was for yelling at them and losing control. Laney reached over the back of the seat squeezing Marti's hand letting the other girl know all had been forgiven.

Paige's brilliant blue eyes met hers in the rear view mirror. “It's okay babe, it happens to the best of us,” she responded. “And to answer your question, I have no idea beyond what you know.” Martina frowned at her. “Hey, don't give me that look. Even I don't know everything about the supernatural,” she flashed her trademark impish grin. “But I know someone who might.”

“Is there anyway you could speak with them tonight,” Marti asked wearily raking a hand through her tangled coffee colored tresses.

Paige frowned thoughtfully as she pulled back into the light traffic. She changed lanes preparing to turn down their street. “I could try, but I may not get an answer until tomorrow morning,” she finally replied.

“Try getting that answer tonight,” Martina begged. “For Mya please get me an answer.” Tears coursed down her face as she stroked her sister's dark hair.
