Chapter Seven
The temperature had dropped dramatically. Any foolish enough to be outdoors at this time of the morning were chilled to the bone within a few steps. Those that came out of Knight Flamye were treated to bitter cold winds buffeting any and all exposed skin. Music that had seemed loud and throbbing upon waiting for entrance was now muted and muffled as they left.
Four young women stumbled out of the club on alert for any sign of danger. They might be young and carefree but life had taught them all some very harsh lessons about living in a big city. There was safety in numbers so they were careful to stay together. Martina held the keys to the truck in her right hand metal glinting between each knuckle, the ring cupped in her palm.
The quartet waited a few minutes by the door hoping to see Paige’s ultra white blonde head come bobbing through the crowd. When it became apparent that she wasn’t right behind them they started for the vehicle. They would wait for the young woman at the car though they damn sure weren’t going to be leaving without her among them.
Even though the group of men had left no more than a few seconds after the girls it was much harder to get out of the club. They could have used their powers to move the crowd but that would bring unwanted attention to them. The last thing they needed was to draw the notice of the local Faction. At the moment the quintet had an uneasy truce with the ruling Faction of Chicago. So when they exited the club the women had quite a lead on them.
The girls were turning the corner of the building heading for the parking lot behind the club when the group of men spilled from the doors. Catching only a glimpse of the ladies as they continued walking the young men headed in that direction. They followed not bothering to hide the fact that they were trailing the young women. It would warn off any who thought to make them victims this night.
Mya was constantly rubbing her arms as the wind and biting cold pierced her flimsy clothing. She complained long and loud about that fact much to the other girls’ amusement.
“You should have known that was going to happen,” Marti reprimanded good naturedly.
“I did, but I was told that I could not go the t-shirt and jeans route even though it’s good enough for Laney,” the multicolor haired young woman groused.
“And I say again that the difference between you and me is I make this look good,” the blonde teased the younger girl.
“You suck,” Mya said heatedly.
“Only if he’s really lucky,” Laney returned cheekily. She took no offense at the other girl’s words knowing that she was grumbling because she was cold. The walk back to the car always seemed to take longer than the one from it.
Everyone laughed at the familiar comeback. It was one that they all used, often as a tension breaker. In the many long months that they had lived together and known each other they had developed their own unique way of coping with the stress of having people constantly in your space. One of their most firm rules was if the door to a room was closed the person within was to be left alone until it was opened once again. They had a variety of techniques that helped them deal with everyone’s peculiar habits.
However they never quite got over Paige’s almost innate sense of approaching danger. It was that feeling that had sent the girls from the warmth of the club out into this dreadful night. They were quick to heed her advice but were deeply troubled by the fact that she had not left the club with them. It left them feeling like they had left her to face the unknown danger alone. It was a feeling that didn’t sit well with any of the young women.
The silver Yukon Denali came into view and the girls breathed a bit easier knowing that they would be marginally safer in the vehicle. Martina hit the button to turn off the alarm and open the back so that at the very least she could get Mya a sweatshirt. It really was cold out and her sister would be grateful for the meager protection it would offer.
Grabbing the black hooded sweatshirt off the floor she turned to hand it off when she froze. Her dark blue eyes traveled past those gathered around the tail gate looking at her to the group of men standing not ten feet from them. Mya took the jacket automatically pulling it on even as she turned to see what held her older sister so fascinated.
Katrina’s soft, “Fuck me,” pretty much summed up their feelings.
The anxiety they had been ignoring now came back ten fold. Added to that was the fact that Paige was nowhere to be found. The young women fanned out knowing that if it came down to it they could break off and run. The street was deserted so screaming for help might not do them any good. The girls’ apprehension increased the longer the guys stood there without speaking. It was as if they were waiting for some cue from the women.
Martina didn’t bother to hide the fact that she was reaching into the car for a weapon. Her fingers curled around the cool metal of the car’s tire iron. She may not be able to face a man one on one but she could damn sure even the odds a bit. She prayed that it wouldn’t come down to a fight because it really didn’t look good for them.
Katrina was moving to head up any confrontation that might occur. She was the “mother” of the group the one all the girls seemed to come to when they needed advice or counsel. They looked to her when they were lost or unsure. This situation could get ugly in a hurry and she could feel violence riding the air tonight like some kind of repulsive perfume. Squaring her shoulder she prepared herself. She would not let her girls down, not when they needed her most.
Laney watched the men warily as they stood there. She could feel the panic clawing at the back of her throat but refused to give into the fear. She had been the victim for too long in life; countless others had often left her helpless. She had waded through too much shit to find herself and these girls that called her family to let someone, anyone, threaten them. Her small hands were curled into fists her blue eyes daring the young men to try something.
Mya was even with Kat not willing to let her friend and sister face any danger without back up. She wanted the redhead to know that she wasn’t alone and that she never had to be again. The younger woman's hands were shoved into the front pocket where shaking fingers wrapped an old chain around her hand. The slight weight of her grandmother’s cross had a calming affect on her. She rubbed the worn surface absently completely unaware that she was doing it. Her strange hazel gaze went past the men to the street beyond hoping to catch a glimpse of Paige’s white blonde head.
“Why are you following us,” Katrina asked breaking the silence that had surrounded the two groups.
Mya’s gaze snapped back to the group of men standing too close for comfort. “Fuck that, where’s Paige,” she demanded.
Kat placed a restraining hand on the youngest girl’s shoulder. They wouldn’t get anywhere if all they did was hurl accusations at the suddenly disturbing presence of the men. “What she means to say is,” the redhead began.
“I think we know exactly what she meant,” Punk interrupted. His emerald eyes bored into the multicolor haired young woman. “The question is why she thinks we know where you’re friend is.”
Katrina ground her teeth in frustration. She and Punk had been going at it like this all night and she had thought that they had reached a kind of uneasy truce. However this was really pushing the limits of her patience and if he kept it up she was going to let them get a full taste of Mya’s unruly tongue. “Now, as I was saying,” she began again.
“Because you’re here and she’s not,” Mya said over the redhead. “And you’re little group’s down one. So I’ll say it again. Where the fuck is Paige?”
It was official; when they got home she was going to ring her scrawny little neck, Martina thought uncharitably. It was just like her bullheaded sister to pour gasoline on a raging inferno. Her fingers tightened around the tire iron her blue eyes studying the group of men after her sister’s latest accusation. The way she figured it, if there was going to be a fight it would most likely start now.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Punk snapped, his anger over the whole situation showing in his voice. “Listen here sister. We were just trying to make sure you made it to your car without a problem. Excuse us for being good guys.”
“What the hell did you expect,” Mya shot back her own temper beginning to bubble up. “You don’t say a damn thing about it to us. What are we supposed to think? Cuz you deciding to be a gentleman was not the first thought that jumped to mind!”
“You ungrateful little,” Punk began before clamping his lips shut though the glare he sent the young woman’s way should have killed her on the spot. He didn’t believe in hitting a woman but in her case he was seriously reconsidering that idea. He turned to the shorter silent man at his elbow. “You deal with her,” he told Low Ki in no uncertain terms.
The young man gave a one shouldered shrug as if he couldn’t have cared less. His eyes, however, told a different story. He cared very much. His burning dark eyes drank in the sight of Mya alight with righteous indignation. Yes he was stung by the young woman’s harsh words but he could understand them. After all they were four women essentially being accosted by a group of unfamiliar men they had met in a club. In his estimation any woman not frightened by the prospect was a fool.
Mya had been consciously ignoring Ki’s presence because he evoked a strange swirl of emotions, emotions she wasn’t quite ready to deal with right now. Her eyes were directed toward some distant spot over his shoulder content to stare into space all night or until Paige showed, whichever happened first. However it seemed fate wasn’t willing to let her continue pretending he wasn’t there.
The wind gentled just enough to send his scent washing over her. There was the soft subtle smell of his cologne along with the fresh clean scent of soap but underneath it all was something indefinable something that said male. It was more devastating than a tsunami could ever have been and like the tide pulled by the moon she swayed toward him.
Low Ki’s eyes darkened; his nostrils flared and a fleeting smile curved the corners of his mouth. It was a smile that said he knew the effect he was having on her. It was gone so fast that had she not been staring at that too handsome face she would have missed it. But it was enough. It was enough to ignite the fading edges of her anger. Her fingers tightened around the delicate chain still in her front pocket. Mya didn’t know what she would have said or done next because she caught a flash of platinum blonde hair.
Paige had begun to run the moment she realized that the girls had headed for the car. She hadn’t really expected them to wait by the door not with how Mya was dressed. However it had shaken her when Austin mentioned that the guys had followed the young women to the vehicle. She needed to make sure that they were all safe and unharmed. The young woman wasn’t sure exactly what she could do against a group this size but she would figure it out when she got there.
Skidding to a halt she saw the girls fanned out around the back of the Yukon. Her heart was a lump at the back of her throat as she realized how close to the guys Mya and Katrina were. Kat was just a bit behind the younger woman as if the taller girl had stepped up to meet some threat. Or knowing Mya like she did, it was to answer the anger that was riding the wind that blew around them.
“Mya,” Paige called calmly hoping to break the stand off between her friend and the young man in front of her.
“Paige,” the young woman said just as coolly without ever taking her eyes off Low Ki.
The blonde cursed her rotten luck upon hearing that tone. It meant that Mya was beyond just plain and simple anger; she was close to exploding. There was no telling what would happen once the other girl unleashed all that pent up rage. She took a couple steps closer making sure to keep out of the reach of Ki. Knowing that Austin was a vampire made her wonder if the others were as well. Until she knew differently she would treat the guys as if they were. It might not be the best defense but it should keep them from getting hurt or at least not too badly.
“Mya, honey, please take a step back,” Paige pleaded with the young woman.
The multicolor haired young woman paused turning to look at the older girl. It was rare for the blonde to use that tone so there had to be something going on that she didn’t yet understand. Straightening up just a bit she noticed that Ki was staring at her friend as if she done some kind of interesting trick. She wasn’t sure quite why that look unnerved her but she didn’t argue with the feeling. She took a step back knowing that Paige hadn’t meant literally just one step. She had probably meant more like several.
As she did Mya saw Ki’s head swivel back in her direction pinning her to the spot. Though he hadn’t said or done anything to make her afraid she couldn’t deny that right at that moment he terrified her. Paige would have called it psychic intuition but the younger woman thought that was a bunch of malarkey. She just didn’t buy into the whole supernatural angle that her friend and roommate did. She didn’t believe that every cold spot was a ghost nor did she think that every large dog was a werewolf. She just didn’t operate that way. However, she was inclined to change her mind given the circumstances of the evening.
Mya swallowed the lump of fear down so that she could speak. “Paige, what’s going on here,” she asked uncertainty creeping into her tone.
The blonde rubbed her forehead a frown pulling her brows together. Paige was used to dealing with the strange, the unusual, things that most people either disbelieved or ignored entirely. A specialist with a local paranormal investigative unit, Paige had, on many occasions shared the eerie details of cases she had worked. While she would never have broken client confidentiality, the tales she had shared with those closest to her were enough to make their hair stand on end. She believed that there were whole worlds that existed alongside and within the one everyone knew about. She was not fanatical about her beliefs nor did she try to force her views on her roommates. She just cautioned the girls to keep an open mind because one never knew when the ordinary would become the extraordinary.
Standing in the cold, quiet parking lot she wondered how to convince her best friends that the men facing them were not what they seemed. If she hadn't been so used to dealing with the supernatural she, herself, may not have noticed all the little things that had led to these frightening thoughts. First had been the way they moved, as if they had muscles a human body just didn't possess. There was a liquid grace to their movements that reminded her of watching a predator stalk its prey. Next had been the fact that they hadn't been drinking at least not like you would have expected to find from young men their age. They had sipped at the drinks as if they were purely props to further a facade. Lastly had been the ability to hear with the commotion going on around the small group. They had been able to hear things that left the girls screaming, “What?” constantly. These things, by themselves, proved nothing but when taken all together they were overwhelming evidence of her belief.
Now she was asking them to make that leap faith into the unknown based on a gut feeling that might be wrong. What was worse was that if she was wrong she might be outing Austin to his friends who, for all she knew, thought he was human. She didn't really believe that, after all in her experience like was attracted to like. It led her to believe if one was they all were. She would tell the girls the truth and hope for the best after that. In a move the blonde would later come to regret she turned her back on the guys to address those closest to her.
“I need you guys to follow me on this one, okay,” she began. She tapped her fingers impatiently against her leg as she tried to figure out the easiest way to explain without confusing any of them. Throwing her hands up in the air she decided to lead them to what she had surmised one step at a time. “They're not human,” she said simply.
“Coulda fooled me,” Katrina said in a bored tone.
“Then what are they,” Martina asked sharply. Of them all she was most likely to believe the blonde.
“You're not,” Mya inquired of the men almost innocently. Given the vibes she had gotten earlier she was more inclined to believe Paige than she might normally have been.
“Not tonight please, Paige,” Laney pleaded in a weary voice. Her nerves were shot and she didn't know if she would be able to take much of the blonde's supernatural spiel.
Paige shot the other blonde an annoyed glare. Ignoring Laney's comment for a moment she looked at each girl. “What have you seen them drink tonight,” she questioned challenging each girl to think about what they had seen tonight with their own eyes.
“They were drinking,” Laney snapped. She had watched Christopher sipping his drink all night long. The others murmured their agreement with that statement.
It took a considerable effort not to shout at these girls she loved like family but that would solve nothing. “Okay, then how many drinks did they have?” She applauded herself for sounding so calm.
That had been the question she should have asked from the beginning Paige realized as she saw the girls open their mouths them close them just as quickly. It was beginning to sink in that the blonde might not be as out of line as they had previously thought.
“Oh please don't tell me you're buying into this shit,” Punk demanded as he saw the truth of Paige's words start the wheels spinning.
“You, shut up! If I want any lip from you I'll rip off your face,” Katrina barked pointing a finger at him. She was still extremely pissed at him for provoking Mya earlier.
He huffed crossing his arms over his chest. He rolled his eyes clearly telling the redhead what he thought of her little outburst.
A movement from the corner of Paige's eye showed Austin trying sink into the background. Her eyes traveled over to Ki who was closest to Mya. He was the biggest threat because was still within arm's reach of the younger girl. His face was a neutral mask showing nothing of what he might be feeling. In fact most of their faces held that bland emptiness except for Punk who seemed torn between furious and amused. She shook her head trying to focus on the topic at hand.
“Any other time you know that I wouldn't push, but please listen to what I'm telling you,” Paige implored them. Why did everything have to be a fight, she wondered crossly. “I'm telling you they aren't human, do you believe that at least,” she demanded of the girls she considered family.
“Yes,” Marti said instantly.
“Why,” Kat asked the oldest Williams' girl.
“Because I do...I can't explain it. I just do,” Martina stated emphatically.
Katrina wasn't really satisfied by that answer and her posture clearly showed that. “That doesn't prove anything Paige. They might not be big drinkers.”
Paige ran a frustrated hand through her blonde mane. She knew that she was going to have to try and reason with them before they would follow her on this. “Kat, you know you don't really believe that. How often have we come to a club and had guys just buy one drink all night?”
The blonde could see the conflict going on behind those turquoise eyes and knew that she was finally reaching her most difficult opponent. “And if they were human why didn't we have to continually have to repeat ourselves to them, especially when we were doing that with each other,” she pressed.
Kat opened her mouth but quickly shut it as she realized with a flash that Paige was correct. They had been shouting to be heard over the music while the guys had seemed to have heard them each and every time, often relaying what had been said. Her small hands began to clench at her sides.
The redhead eyed the group of men suspiciously. She had to admit that there was something strange about them. Given how hard Paige was pushing this issue she was willing to follow the other two this time. “Okay, if they're not human, then what are they,” she asked.
Paige ignored that question for the moment. She needed the others to at least admit that there really might be more going on here than the surface revealed. “And you two,” she questioned Mya and Laney. Both girls nodded mutely. It was enough for her. Biting her lip nervously she eyed her friends. Getting them to believe the guys weren't human had been an effort but well worth it in her opinion if it kept any of them from being on the evening's menu.
“I know I've asked you to take a lot on faith here, but what I'm about to say is...well, rather unbelievable,” The blonde started.
“Just tell us,” Martina said gently. “Whatever it is can't be all that bad.”
Paige had to smile at that. Marti knew how to put people at ease and she did it without even thinking about it. She just hoped that the others were as understanding as the oldest Williams' sister. Taking a deep breath she closed her eyes and let it out slowly. “Okay then, they're vampires,” she blurted out.
“What,” Katrina asked indignantly.
“You can't be serious,” Laney exclaimed.
“Oh my god,” Marti whispered harshly.
“That's a good one,” Mya said before bursting into laughter that was echoed by the others. It didn't occur to the girls that they had been the only ones to protest the blonde's accusation, though that knowledge seemed to be slowly sinking in as they looked from one to another then back to her.
Paige noted that Martina was the first to stop laughing followed closely by Mya. Their eyes were trained on the guys. Chancing a glance over her shoulder she realized that the group of men was staring at her dumbfounded. They then turned to Aires who was shaking his head obviously telling his friends that he hadn't been the one to confess that little secret.
“Jesus,” Kat swore her turquoise eyes flashing.
“Wait a minute,” Laney snapped her patience finally at an end. If this was some kind of joke it was a really bad one. “You're telling me we're supposed to believe that these guys are some kind of bloodsuckers?”
“That's exactly what I'm telling you,” Paige ground out. “Fangs, blood drinking, mind control, the whole nine yards vampires!”
It was the curiously asked, “Vampires?” that raised the hairs on the back of Paige's neck. Her cerulean eyes widened as Mya brought her right hand out of the sweatshirt's front pocket. Wrapped around that small fist was a delicate chain that she knew contained the Williams' family cross. She had to do something before things went to hell in a hand basket.
Paige watched Mya struggle with what she'd been told and what she had thought to be real only moments ago. The younger girl's blue green eyes looked from the cross in her hand to the group of men in front of her as if weighing something out in her mind. A strange sense of dread settled in the pit of the blonde's stomach, which only grew when she saw Christopher draw back swiftly.
The blonde noticed that he and Austin were the only ones that seemed to do so. Punk and Lance stared at the multicolor haired girl mirth clearly shining in their eyes. They began to point and chuckle which only seemed to infuriate Mya.
“It doesn't even glow. Isn't it supposed to around our kind,” Punk asked the other man off handedly.
Absently Paige noted that Katrina looked as if she had been struck. It was as if that one comment lent a credence to her words that she, herself, hadn't been able to adequately convey.
“I do believe that it is,” Hoyt returned amusement ringing in his voice.
The blonde wanted to smack them both but wasn't about to attempt such a feat. The men had just set the match to the tinderbox that was the youngest of them. Paige had learned very early on that you didn't provoke Mya without serious repercussions.
“What's the matter little one? Don't you have the faith to back up that symbol,” Punk continued to taunt the young woman. By now both men were laughing out right.
Paige's blood ran cold as she watched Mya's brow furrow and her hand opened even more. She was no more than two steps away from the other girl but knew that she would never make it in time to stop what was to come. It seemed that Ki realized her intent about the same time because he shifted his weight to his back foot turning his body slightly away from her.
“See how funny you think this is,” she hissed a moment before she grabbed the young man's right arm.
There was a moment of perfect stillness as the smell of burning flesh reached their nostrils. That moment of eerie silence stretched out like something out of a bad horror flick before screams filled the cold night air and chaos erupted. The pair sank to the ground both trying to get away from the searing pain. Punk and Lance reached for Ki who snapped viciously at them as Martina dropped the tire iron going for her fallen sister.
Paige was right behind Marti both of them holding onto Mya. “Honey,” she shouted hoping to be heard over the screaming. “Mya you have to let go of the cross. As long as you hold on it will continue to burn.”
Lance was yelling directions of his own to the fallen man. “Ki catch her gaze...get her to let go of the damned thing!”
The blonde was horror stricken. She watched helplessly as Martina lifted her sister's head to stare into the golden glowing eyes of Low Ki. She knew the other girl only wanted to end the suffering of her younger sibling. It didn't change the fact that if he enthralled her Ki would have a hold over Mya that no one could break.
The young girl's screams continued for what seemed like ages. Then as if a switch had been thrown there was utter silence. It was eerie in nature as the two locked together in pain suddenly stilled. Even the wind, which seemed to have been the harbinger of the evening stopped. There was a ripple of something, it couldn't be seen, but its effects were most definitely felt.
Mya's hand slowly, painfully, uncurled from around Ki's arm. What was left of the cross flowed down the gap to roll away from the pair like quicksilver. The young woman's tear filled hoarse voice could barely be heard chanting, “I didn't know,” over and over again like a mantra. Martina pulled her younger sister back from the man. Immediately she got the young woman unsteadily to her feet and the first aid kit at the rear of the SUV.
Numbly Paige watched as Laney picked up the dropped tire iron stepping up to protect her. Katrina gripped the platinum blonde's arm urging her to her feet to pull her toward the car and away from the group of stunned men. When Austin moved to help their fallen friend the other blonde raised the weapon wielding it like a baseball bat. “Take one more fuckin' step and I will splatter your brains all over the asphalt,” she barked fiercely.
“He should have been able to get away,” Paige heard herself say.
“Yes, he should have,” Daniels agreed cautiously as he moved slowly forward showing that he only wanted to help their comrade. “I think, like us all, he was caught off guard by her actions.”
Distantly they could hear that Mya's chant had changed. She had now added, “I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't know.” Martina was hushing the girl, soothing her as best she could while dressing the wound on the heel of her hand. It seemed that the cross slipped from the palm to the back as she had reached for Low Ki's arm.
Everyone watched as Marti took care of her sister. One arm was wrapped protectively around Mya's shoulders as if afraid that something else would happen to her sibling. She pulled a tissue out of the box catching the younger girl's tears as they fell. Her voice was soft and musical as she murmured nonsensical soothing words.
“Will someone please shut her the fuck up,” Punk demanded of the girls as Ki got to his feet.
Lance slapped the dark haired man upside the head. The fierce expression on the big man's face was enough to keep whatever else Punk had been tempted to say safely behind his lips. “She's in pain you idiot. What do you expect?”
“Not to mention she's just had her world turned upside down,” Christopher reminded them.
“She's not the only one,” Katrina ground out still in shock after all that she had just witnessed.
By now Mya's plaintive cries were beginning to wear on everyone’s taut nerves. Martina could be heard trying, in vain, to quiet her younger sibling. “Please sweetie hush. I know it hurts but you have to stop now,” there was an edge of hysteria to the older girl's voice.
“Mya,” Ki spoke with an air of authority that commanded the young girl's immediate attention. He raised his hand as if he could touch her even from the distance that separated them. Looking at the youngest Williams' girl's face perhaps he was. Her eyes had slipped shut and her face was tilted as if she could feel him on her skin.
Alarmed Paige noted that his friends were looking at the young man as if he had lost his mind. But his attention was focused solely on the young woman sitting in the back of the SUV. A smile tugged at one corner of his mouth as he splayed his fingers, “Sleep,” he said in a voice that left no room for argument.
A pulse of energy left his outstretched hand. Passing through the air it drew gasps from all the girls and in drawn breaths from the guys. Golden glowing light seemed to hover around Mya a moment before sinking into her skin. Instantly the young woman went slack her body limp and lifeless looking.
Martina was lightly tapping her sister's face. “Mya. Mya? Mya! You have to wake up now,” she pleaded tears beginning to run down her face.
“What have you done,” Christopher thundered even though he had a pretty good idea what had happened here tonight. It didn't bode well for them. The other Factions merely tolerated the small clan's presence in their lands with the understanding that they would take no mates nor draw unwanted attention to themselves.
The young man turned cool eyes on their leader. “Only what I had to.”
“Bullshit,” Punk barked. “You didn't have to; you wanted to. If you're going to put our asses in the sling the least you could fuckin' do is tell us the truth.”
Katrina let out a long piercing whistle drawing everyone's attention. “Okay now that I've got your attention, why not try cluing us in as to what the hell just happened here,” she demanded.
“He's claimed her,” Paige informed the girls dully still trying to come to terms with that fact. She knew she shouldn't but she felt responsible for what had happened tonight.
“He can't claim her,” Laney shrieked her fingers tightening on the tire iron making the knuckles white. “She's not property!”
Daniels rubbed his forehead sighing wearily. “I'm afraid that's exactly what happened here, though there's more to a proper claim than what you've witnessed here,” he told the startled women.
“Like what,” Paige asked the professional in her coming to the fore. Secretly she was hoping to find a way to break the hold Ki had on Mya.
“Not now Paige,” Kat bit out trying desperately to get them all out of here and safely back home. That was her first priority at the moment; answers could come later...much later if she had her way.
For the first time in quite a while Paige relented. She knew that the other girls weren't as accustomed to the supernatural as she was and they had reached their limit for the evening. “Fine, but this isn't over. We need to know what's happening with Mya and how to help her.”
The redhead nodded realizing that ignoring this wasn't going to benefit the younger girl. “Do you have a number we can reach you at,” she asked Christopher not even bothering to give Punk, or the others, a glance.
Daniels made sure to keep his movements slow so as not to further distress the young women. He produced a card from his wallet before handing it over to Katrina.
Kat took it noting that it had his name and a phone number on it but nothing else. “Why am I not surprised,” she asked archly stuffing the card in the back pocket of her jeans. Turning to the other girls she motioned them to the car.
Paige helped Marti load Mya into the vehicle then pried the keys from the oldest Williams' girl's fingers. Laney slowly backed toward the car the tire iron still held in a vice like grip. Seeing that the others were now in the relative safety of the car she made her way over to it. “When we're ready to deal with this we'll give you a call,” Katrina tossed over her shoulder slamming the door for emphasis.
The blonde gave them an apologetic look. “Just give them some time. They're not used to dealing with things like this,” Paige told the group of men.
“But you are, aren't you little one,” Christopher asked amusement in his eyes.
Paige smiled cryptically at that. “That's an answer for another day,” she returned just a flippantly. With a small wave she climbed behind the wheel. Before she had even finished backing out of the stall the group was gone. She suspected that they weren't really gone just out of sight giving the girls time to rest and recoup. In the coming days she knew they were going to need all the strength they could get.
