SAMPLE OF A LESSON PLAN TITLE OF LESSON: Quick and Dirty with Madelyn Hunter: Writing an Effective Lesson Plan GRADE LEVEL: College Level LENGTH: Three class periods CONTENT AREA: Pedagogy STANDARD (PPR): Standard I. The teacher designs instruction appropriate for all students that reflects an understanding of relevant content and is based on continuous and appropriate assessment. Standard 1.21k. The teacher exhibits awareness of the importance of planning lessons and structuring units so that activities progress in a logical sequence. OBJECTIVE(S): Upon completion of the lesson, the student will be able to 1. identify major components of an effective lesson plan. 2. give examples of appropriate activities for each component. 3. develop an effective lesson plan. PURPOSE: The purpose of this lesson is to give pres-service teachers practice in creating lesson plans using the Hunter Model. ANTICIPATORY SET (FOCUS) A phrase will be displayed on the computer overhead: ÒToday in class we are going to get quick and dirty.Ó MATERIALS 1. Computer with Power Point application program 2. Power Point document with Madelyn HunterÕs Effective Lesson Planning 3. Handout: Down and Dirty with Madelyn Hunter 4. Paper 5. Pen/pencil 6. Ten examples of lesson plans downloaded from the computer by each student prior to class. ACTIVITIES (PROCEDURES) Lecture/discussion of lesson planning Small group analysis of Lesson Plans 1. Students will be divided into groups of 2-3 students. 2. Using the assigned ten lesson plans brought to class by each student, the group will analyze five plans from each member of the group. 3. As a group, students will write appropriate statements that might be missing from the analyzed plans. TEACHING INPUT: Teacher will lecture and discuss the elements of an effective lesson plan using the Madelyn Hunter model. MODELING: 1. Using a lesson plan from the Internet, the teacher will analyze it using the components discussed in class. 2. The teacher will provide an example of a lesson plan that incorporates all the major components of the Madelyn Hunter model. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING QUESTIONING STRATEGIES 1. Randomly ask students to list four of the major components. 2. Ask students to give at least one example for each component. 3. Have random students identify elements when described by the teacher. GUIDED PRACTICE: Students will work together in groups to analyze lesson plans. The teacher will monitor group discussions and clarify any necessary points. Reteach as needed. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Students will design a lesson plan that includes all of the elements of an effective lesson plan. CLOSURE Students will come back together in a general meeting in which they will share lesson plans and discuss any changes made to them by the group. Teacher will summarize and clarify any questions or misunderstandings about the assignment. Teacher will preview highlights of next weekÕs material to be covered and the assignment that is due. ASSESSMENT Given a topic, students will write a lesson plan incorporating all the elements of an effective lesson plan. REFLECTION: Included, but not limited to these considerations: 1. What was the most effective part of the lesson? 2. What part of the lesson had the least impact on student outcomes? 3. What might be done differently next time? 4. Where the objectives adequately covered? 5. What changes should be made before this lesson is taught? 6. What are the implications drawn from this teaching experience that might be applied to other teaching opportunities? |
