| UEFA 16th May 1973, Leeds United v AC Milan in the final of the European Cup Winners Cup Leeds lost the game 1-0 and Norman Hunter was sent off. Greek Referee Christos Michas would not give Leeds any free kicks and any denied Leeds 3 clear cut penalties. It was discovered afterwards that the referee had been bribed by AC Milan. So what did UEFA do, they banned the referee for life. (he only had one year left before he had to retire). No punishment for AC Milan and they get to keep the cup (that they had cheated and were proved to have cheated) in winning the game. |
| Ray Tinkler Who on earth is Ray Tinkler? Ray Tinkler is a football referee who would be forgotton now if he did his job properley. Ray Tinkler is the man who cheated Leeds United out of the championships in 1971 and 1972, 17 April 1971 Leeds Were 2 points clear at the top of the league with 4 games to play. Leeds United v West Bromwich Albion. Norman Hunter pass to Johnny Giles is intercepted by Tony Brown who sets off for goal then pauses, because in the centre of the pitch Colin Suggett is 10 to 15yards offside. The linesman has his flag high in the air waving to attract Tinklers attention and Brown pauses again. Tinkler puts the whistle to his lips then nothing. He waves play on and Brown continues his run to goal. Most of the Leeds team have stopped,Tony Brown runs towards goal and had plenty of time to pass the ball to Jeff Astle who was also 2 yards offside. Tinkler was very pleased with himself because he did what nobody else could do. Stop Leeds United. What followed was just as bazaar, Tinkler had enraged the supporters so much so that some came onto the pitch to protest. Not bazaar you might think, except these supporters were respectable elderley gentlemen not young hooligans. This was the started hooligan problem at Leeds that has stuck ever since. Leeds United were banned from playing their first 5 home games of the following season at home. Leeds only managed to pick up 2 points from those 5 games, and consiquently lost the division title to Derby County by 1 point. So whenever anybody ever asks you who in football do Leeds fans hate the most. Obviously Cantona,Ferdinand,Hasselbaink,Roy Keane,Ferguson,Beckham,and yes Bowyer are gonna be on the list, but Ray Tinkler stands head and shoulders above them all. Leeds lost the title by 1 point, two seasons on the trot and it was all down to one pathetic excuse for a man. Unbiased Commentator Barry Davies said "And Leeds will go mad! And they have every right to go mad!" You could say it was a long time ago and we should let bygones be bygones but Adolph Hitlers murderous exploits were also a long time ago, and we could never forgive him. |
