Filk is a many-faceted thing. the simplest definition of it is "science fiction folk." Just as folk singers of old took songs floating around and made up new lyrics, or wrote their own songs about their cultures (later pirated by other folk singers and changed), so SF fans tend to take songs, and write their own lyrics.
I'll admit it, I've been a fan of Wierd Al, Tom Leher, Broadway tunes, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. (When I was playing Galaxy Rangers in the basment, the PP&M records were staples of the "soundtrack!"). I was pretty much destined for filking, and if you want to find me at a SF convention, look no further than the filk room!
