STORY ABOUT JONA MILIJINA A TRADITIONAL SERBIAN WITCH

In the book "Caranje, gatanje, vracanje i proricanje u u nasem narodu" (Speel Casting, Divination, Witchcraft and Fortune-tellings in Our Nation) by Dr Radovan Kazimirovic (belgrade, 1940) there are some inetresting stories about our witches. For example, in thisbook is described a wiich Jona Milijina from the village Urovice. She healed people and if somebody had blackcattle stolen, she would make the thief himself admit to the crime. For example, around or after midnight, she would go to the river carryng a bag made of goat hair. Size of the bag was nine nails. In the bag was nine barley grains, nine corn grains, nine silk threads, and one silver coin. Then sho took hazel wand and naked she worked magic and invoked Tartars. Number nine is important in this invocation. Tartar or Tarter is other (secret?) name of Vodenjak who is spirit of water and in some rural areas known as a water God. While she walked away, she would not turn back.

BLACK-HANDLED KNIVES IN SOUTH SLAVIC OLD RELIGION
Black-handled knives were recorded in one old text on Macedonian spells from the 8th century (Dr. J. H. Vasiljevic: Makedonski Zbornik, page 15). Konstantin, from Shtinkart (a village near the city of Pech, Kosovo) Priest of the Eastern Orthodox Church, has mentioned black-handled knife in his book from 1520. The black-handled knife is ynder the name kustura in Serbia and under the name kostura in Monte Negro. Sometimes, the black-handled knife is forged from a dead mare's horseshoe. The handle is made from a black male goat's hoof or from the right horn of a black ram. Consecration of the black-handled knife is performed during the eclipse of the Moon. the person who performs the ritual puts the black-handled knife in a vessel filled with water. Then she (or he) places the vessel in such a position that the eclipsed Moon can be seen on the surface of the weter, and waits for the Moon to come out from the shadow. When the Moon appears from the dark she (or he) pronounces appropriate words which ends with: "Be more powerful, Om Moon! be stronger, Oh Moon! Dedicate this knife, Oh Moon!". When the whole Moon appears from the darkness she (or he) tahes the knife from the water. It's believed that this knife is now consecrated and charged with the Moon's power.

More will be added soon!
