The Gould's goanna, Varanus gouldii (family Varanidae), is very highly valued as a source of meat. Its light meat tastes good and is typically cooked as simply as possible: straight on the coals of the fire.

This goanna can be distinguished from a similar monitor sp., Varanus storri, by the white tip of its tail (see the accompanying image). The two types go by the same name.
