Fork-tailed kite, Milvus migrans

The fork-tailed kite, Milvus migrans (family Accipitridae), is the most common of the most common of the large dark kites in central Cape York Peninsula. The square-tailed kite, Lophoictinia isura, and the whistling kite, Milvus sphenurus, are also found and go by the same name.

The fork-tailed kite is abundant in town and in open woodlands and open grassy country. It is attracted to grassfires, where it feeds on grasshoppers.
