About the historian...

My name is John Lopez and I am pursuing a Ph.D. in History at the University of Michigan, specializing in U.S. history (post-1865), Latino history, the American West, and Modern Latin America. I'm also looking for a community college teaching position in U.S. and/or Latin American history, or Chicano/Latino studies... preferably someplace warm. I've taught at Cerritos College and Fullerton College, both in sunny southern California.

Some scholars, those who are self-exiled in academia's "Ivory Tower," look down their noses at community colleges. I take a different approach, summed up by my belief that 'history is for the masses, not the classes.' Thus, part of the reason why I am compiling links of internet resources in history and American cultural studies and assorted law, politics, and public policy links is to make them available those persons who are otherwise unable to access or locate such resources.

In case you're wondering, I am not a native Michigander; I only go to school there. I've lived most of my life in southern California, having called Diamond Bar "home" for much of that time. I received my A.B. from the University of Southern California, and I also picked up an M.A. from Cal State Fullerton, where I specialized in U.S. Diplomatic History and Modern Latin America.

Unlike some grad students, I made sure I got involved in non-academic ventures while at Michigan. For two years, I was in the Rackham Student Government (the grad school student government) and the Michigan Student Assembly (the campuswide student government). Eventually, I became RSG co-president and MSA's Budget Priorities Committee Vice Chair. Among my numerous duties in each office, I became a website designer, having created the RSG site and redesigned the BPC pages.
