“The richest value of wilderness lie not in the days of Daniel Boone, nor even in the present but rather in the future.” “The good life on any river may…depend on the perception of its music, and the preservation of some music to perceive.”
-Aldo Leopold

(Upon signing of the Wilderness Act, 1964) "If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it."
-President Lyndon B. Johnson

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters."
- Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan- like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."
--Henry David Thoreau

"Originating in Georgia, Terrapin Creek meanders 400 miles in its'westwardly course until it empties into the Coosa River. As it crosses the Alabama/Georgia border its' path takes it through the foothills of the Appalachains and the community of Borden Springs, in Cleburne County. For generations, the families who call its banks home have drunk, swam and fished in its pristine waters. It remains that way to this day. However, the water quality is being threatened by a strip mining operation near Borden Springs....an operation that could endanger both the residents who draw their drinking water from the stream and the abundant fish and wildlife that rely on its life-giving flow. It also threatens the existing water table...a table already lowered from decreased rainfall in the last few years. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has issued a permit to Hargal Mining Company to initiate strip-mining for precious metals. The area of Borden Springs ( and the strip mine) are in the middle of a potentially promising area for ecotourism..the Pinhoti Trail, Chief Ladiga Trail, Dugger Mountain and the Talladega National Forest. To the north, lies Desoto State Park and Little River Canyon. It makes little sense that this rugged, beautiful country should be spoiled by a mining operation. Recent chemical analysis thru Jacksonville State Universities Department of Physical and Earth Sciences have indicated that this stream is free of toxic metals....metals that could be discharged by a strip mine. This organization and this website are about preserving this God-given pristine beauty for future generations. Please help us in this battle for one of the last truly unspoiled regions of our great State. Please write, call or email your representative, your senator, Gov. Siegelman, and ADEM and let them know you are against this destruction of a natural resource. Then email FOTC and let us know you are behind our cause. We thank you and please be sure to sign our guestbook located near the bottom of this page!
