Mission Statement by Norman Fleming Torrie, MBA, President

DISASTER RECOVERY - WHAT DOES IT MEAN IN YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR LIFE?

Disaster Recovery - what events are we talking about?

Any event that will preclude you from doing business as usual could be a disaster for your business

Natural Disasters such as floods, winds, hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, earthquakes . . . .

Loss of data access or records on computer files.

Loss of the activities of personnel or use of facilities for a period of time sufficient to impact your business.

What are the remedies?

You know your business, you already know what you can do to minimize some of these elements. You have insurance for your business (property, liability, business continuity and so on). But have you considered regular file backups offsite, even in another location, scanning important documents and writing them to CD and then storing the multiple copies of CDs in different offsite locations? Have you considered travel policies to ensure that your business has limited exposure to travel disasters? Do you purchase insurance to help your employees families deal with disasters? Do you have arrangements with alternative sites, alternative equipment to continue operations with limited notice? Can you reach your employees quickly and easily if they are not on site should a disaster befall the business? Many questions such as these need to be addressed in a formal Disaster Recovery Plan. The plan once in place needs to be reviewed both annually and, whenever significant changes occur in your business, your environment and your markets.

These are but the start of the process to consider how business continuity can be managed in your business.

Call Atwell Fleming business management and development for assistance in putting together a Disaster Recovery Plan. Call before you need it.
