Lantis is an important character in the second season of Magic Knight
Rayearth, so his relationships with many of the other characters
in the series play an integral role in the story.
Primary Relationships:
Primera
As previously mentioned, Primera is in love with Lantis...
Unfortunately, this makes her quite jealous and clingy around him.
She is very possessive, and tries to get rid of anyone who tries to
get close to him (usually with little success ^_~). She also follows
him almost wherever he goes (I say almost because there are
essential moments in the series when Primera isn't hovering around
Lantis. ^_~)
It's hard to say how much Lantis cares for Primera; he's never been
an openly emotional character. I'm sure does, in his own way... He
did save her life, and lets her cast spells on him (probably knowing
that that would make her happy ^_^). Although, he has openly snubbed
her once (in the manga, at least)... Primera was being sat on by
Mokona; she pleaded for Lantis to help her, but he walked right past
her. ^_^; I'm sure that was because she was in no real danger, though.
I believe Lantis loves Primera in a purely platonic fashion, kind of
like Peter Pan and Tinkerbell... (Besides, I'm not sure it would work
out between a human and a pixie, anyways. ^_^;)
Zagato
As mentioned a couple of times before, Zagato is Lantis' older
brother... Although we don't see much of their relationship in the
series (as Zagato is already dead by the time Lantis appears), one
gets the impression that they were very close... They both trained
together under the tutelage of Guru Clef, and both were assigned
posts under Princess Emeraude; Zagato as High Priest, and Lantis as
Captain of the Guard.
However, the most telling moment of Lantis' feelings for his brother
is during a flashback to the time of Zagato's death... Lantis was in
the country of Autozam at the time, and when he comes to the
realization that his brother is dead, the normally impassive Lantis
shows his grief by weeping upon Eagle's shoulder.
It is because of Zagato's death (which occurred simply because his
brother had fallen in love with Cephiro's ruler) that Lantis despises
the Pillar System so much... He then decides to leave Autozam in order
to return to Cephiro, so that he may eliminate the System in his own
way.
Eagle
Lantis first met Eagle in Autozam, where they both trained in that
country's army together. It seems they possess a strong bond with each
other, which is challenged when Eagle becomes the head of Autozam's
force to invade Cephiro, Lantis' home country.
To be honest, I find Lantis' and Eagle's relationship very difficult
to define... Certainly they were best friends, but I don't think they
were lovers (which is a popular theory ^_^;). They are both warriors,
so they have that bond, and according to Geo (who is also from
Autozam), they are both stubborn, and fight for what they believe in.
Geo also claims that Lantis really trusted Eagle (which is seen when
Lantis openly mourns the death of his brother in front of Eagle);
however, that trust is tested when Eagle decides to invade Cephiro.
Later in the manga, we discover that Eagle does this not only for
the sake of his country, but to save Lantis... Lantis was willing to
give up his life in order to destroy the Pillar Sytem of Cephiro, so
Eagle retaliates by trying to sacrifice himself instead. This does
make one wonder if Eagle was in love with Lantis... But it is also
possible that Eagle didn't want his best friend to die needlessly,
even if it was for a worthy cause.
Hikaru
The relationship between Lantis and Hikaru differs somewhat between
the anime and manga... However, in both versions, they both have a
strong attraction to each other. ^_^
In the anime, Hikaru is deeply in love with Lantis, but is torn
because she believes he might not return her love, since she was
forced to kill Lantis' brother Zagato in the first series. This
relationship is the main focus in the anime, as Hikaru must come to
terms with her true feelings for Lantis; even battling her dark side
(in the form of Nova), who constantly taunts her feelings for him. By
end of the anime, Hikaru manages to confess her love to Lantis, and he
finally admits that he returns her love as well. ^_^
In the manga, it seems that opposite is true; and that Lantis has some
unrequited feelings for Hikaru. ^_~ This is most obvious at the end of
the manga, starting when Eagle teases Lantis about his wanting to take
Hikaru to visit the everyone else... Just after a touching moment
between the two (where Lantis compares Hikaru to Eagle), Lantis asks
Hikaru how they confess their love on her world, and she replies that
they ask to marry each other. He then asks her if she wants to marry
anyone, and Hikaru responds, "Lantis... And Eagle!" ^_^ (Lantis'
reaction is priceless... ^_~)
Hikaru then explains that she loves both of them, as well as everyone
else in Cephiro, and that she wants to be with all of them forever...
Then Lantis sweeps her up in his cape, and claims that her heart has
made Cephiro "a truly beautiful place". Isn't that sweet? ^_^
Coming soon... (Maybe... ^_~) The love triangle: Lantis, Eagle &
Hikaru
Secondary Relationships:
Clef
Clef is Lantis' mentor, of sorts, as it was he who trained Lantis in
the use of magic (as he did most of the magic-users in Cephiro). Their
duties to the Pillar of Cephiro (Clef as Guru and Lantis as Captain of
the Inner Guard) made the two of them among the first to realize the
blossoming, forbidden love between Sol Zagato and Princess Emeraude.
Because of this, Clef openly questions the Pillar System in front
of Lantis, wondering, "Is this land truly beautiful?" It is probably
Clef's influence (as well as his brother Zagato's feelings) that fuel
Lantis' distaste for the Pillar System; it is shortly after this
incident that Lantis leaves Cephiro to explore other countries.
La Farga
As the Captain of the Guard after Lantis' departure, La Farga seems
to harbour a strong resentment towards Lantis... He is one of the few
characters from the first series who actually recognizes him, and it
is La Farga's reaction to Lantis that influences our opinion of him
early on.
It is La Farga who is the first to tell the Magic Knights that
Lantis is Zagato's brother; he then goes on to say that after the
death of Princess Emeraude, Lantis returned to Cephiro... Having
just come from the Autozam, one of the countries now invading
Cephiro. This plants further suspicion in our minds that Lantis
might have some dark motive... Later in the manga, La Farga openly
accuses Lantis of being a spy for Autozam (which Hikaru emphatically
denies ^_~).
Though their relationship might be turbulent, La Farga's opinions
of Lantis do make us wonder what Lantis' true motives might be in the
series.
Emeraude
As a former Captain of the Inner Guard, Lantis' original job was to
protect the previous ruler of Cephiro, Princess Emeraude. This implies
that he and the princess had a professional relationship, as well as
the relationship between a subject and their benevolent ruler.
However, he and Emeraude had another connection, as well... Since
the Princess was secretly in love with Lantis' brother, Sol Zagato.
This meant that they both cared for Zagato in their own way (which
is a connection, of sorts); Lantis loved him as a brother, while
Emeraude cared for him as a lover.
Lantis also seems to have understood the
relationship between Emeraude and Zagato better than anyone else...
According to him, they couldn't deny their feelings for each other,
because of the strength of their love (and because of the nature of
Cephiro itself, as it is a place of wills). And since Emeraude wasn't
willing to sacrifice her own country so she could openly love Zagato,
Lantis admits that even Zagato himself knew the love affair would only
end in tragedy.
Nova (Anime only)
In the anime, Nova is Hikaru's dark side, the sad part of her that she
left behind in Cephiro when she and Magic Knights defeated Emeraude,
and were sent back to Tokyo. She claims to hate everything that Hikaru
loves, yet possesses a strange love/hate relationship with Hikaru's
beloved, Lantis.
Nova herself appears to be confused about her feelings
for Lantis, just like Hikaru is; at one point in the anime, Nova
captures Lantis, but seems to regret that she has to use him bait to
get to Hikaru. In some ways, Nova is a dark reflection of Hikaru's own
feelings for Lantis.
Alcyone (Anime only)
In the anime, Alcyone returns (rather than dying, like she did in the
manga), now under the influence of the new villain of the series, Lady
Debonair. She still bears her unrequited love for Zagato, which she
carries over to Lantis when she first meets him.
Because of his strong resemblance his older brother, she believes
Lantis is Zagato... The odd thing is, Lantis does nothing to
dissuade her of the notion (at least, at first). It is unclear why he
does this; perhaps he felt sorry for her... Or perhaps (to look at it
more cynically) he did it to pump her for information on the enemy;
Alcyone eventually turns traitor on Lady Debonair, which costs her
her life.
