| Dear Letters Editor: Was doing some surfing for MTBE research and found this site which is protected from stupid, prying taxpayers eyes: "UCD Researchers may enter the MTBE abstract library by clicking here (password required)" at http://tsrtp.ucdavis.edu/mtbe/. If you would like to see how our benevolent "leaders" are poisoning us, and what they have chosen to allow us to see, this stuff is scary enough: http://tsrtp.ucdavis.edu/mtberpt/homepage.html Based on the brief skimming I did at that site, it is absolutely incredible that state government has decided to "phase out" the use of this formerly useless refinery byproduct in our gasoline. Over 700 wells have been condemned and one CA city (Santa Barbara?) has lost its local city water supply because of excessive levels of this stuff in the water. It is very curious that when relatively large quantities of artificial sweetener equivalent to a human consumption of some 1100 cans of soda per day caused cancer in rodents, the "experts" decided to ban it for use, but something with little known long term effects but significant signs of potentially severe damage to us is "scheduled" for phase-out. A million pounds of MTBE each day is spit out of our tailpipes and, while this poison dissolves readily in water, no one knows whether or how long it will take to degrade in nature. It is a pity we cannot sue our government when they behave irresponsibly, but our new king, the federal government has re-declared sovereign immunity.
