Les Misérables
When Les Misérables opened in London in 1985, it didn't get the greatest reviews, but when it moved on to Broadway two years later, it quickly became the "world's most popular musical." Based on Victor Hugo's French novel of the same name, this is the story of the uprising of the common people in 19th century Paris. It also tells the life of the convict Jean Valjean, who was jailed for 19 years just for trying to steal a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. This show conquered the 1987 Tony Awards, winning 8, including Best Musical, and it is the longest-running Broadway show ever after Cats.
