One of the newest galactic superpowers, the Narn Regime's time in power had lasted little more than fifty years. However, in that time the Regime has fought four major wars, built a star empire encompasing four systems and has created a fleet of warships nearly one hundred strong.
Narn history is filled with accounts of occupation and subjugation. Approximately one thousand years before the Centauri arrived on Narn, the Shadows built a base on the planet for use against the Vorlons. When the Shadows discovered the existence of Narn telepaths, they began a brutal campaign of extermination which succeeded in killing nearly ever telepath on the planet. In retaliation, a Warleader going by the assumed name of G'Quon assembled a massive army which included the remaining telepaths and launched a massive attack on the Shadow base. The battle itself raged for two fulls weeks and most of the Narn population was killed off by the powerful Shadow weapons and warships, but in the end number proved to be the deciding factor as the Shadow troops were swamped and destroyed piecemeal. Seeing that the battle was lost and to commit further forces would be fruitless, the Shadows withdrew from Narn and moved on.
For the next thousand years, the Narn began to flourish on their world. The war with the Shadows becoming a part of their lore, the Narn returned to a time when they beleived that they were the only sentient mortal species in the galaxy and that those who crossed the stars were god. It was this belief that allowed the Centauri Republic to take over so easily when they arrived in orbit of Narn in 2109.
Without warning, the city of Kel'rak was destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion which devestated the countryside for forty kilometers in every direction and killed over two million Narn. Within hours, Centauri troops shuttles had dropped from the sky and were headed for the capital city to speak with the Kah'ri. There they claimed that they had defeated a hostile force and had saved Narn from occupation, to which the relatively peaceful Narn were hugely grateful. For the first twenty years of the occupation, the Narn worked willingly for the Centauri, beleiving themselves to be hugely indebted to them for saving their world. Then, slowly, things began to change. Centauri rule became harsher as the Narn began to question their total loyalty to the Republic. Overseers became cruel and heartless, deporting entire towns to the southern mines to help extract valuable metals from the ground. By the twenty-third year of the occupation, the first Narn resistance cell had been founded and within two months three Centauri ships had been rigged with explosives and had exploded in orbit.
The Centauri reprisals were brutal, villages being deported to the factories to make munitions and hostages taken to insure the cooperation of the males. However, the resistance refused to be deterred and casualties grew steadily higher among the Centauri. However, being poorly organized and not well schooled in the arts of evading detection, the different resistance cells began to fall to methodical Centauri anti-terrorism units, their members being publicly executed as a warning to the rest of the population. For the next thirty years, resistance remained minimal as the Centauri maintained their iron grip on the Narn population. It wasn't until 2162 that the Narn resistance once again flourished and renewed its strikes against the occupation troops. As before, the Centauri fought back but this time were not as successful as the Narn had learned their tactics and knew how to anticipate them. A stalemate ensued in which the Centauri were unable to stop the resistance from launching lightning raids into their supplylines and the Narn could not exact a final victory and drive the Centauri from their world. The stalemate situation peristed until 2201 when the Centauri could no longer maintain the massive star empire they had created and were forced to pull some troops from Narn. Seeing that their efforts were finally suceeding, the resistance redoubled their attacks and by 2207 had managed to force the withdrawl of all troops except for those in the capital city and its outlying suburbs. 'Fortress Narn' remained in place for the next two years as the population surrounding the city began to arm themselves with modern weaponry and even a few fighter craft stolen from the Centauri. By 2209, the Centarum had ordered the withdrawl of the entire garrison on Narn and the
Primus Cruiser Halberd had arrived to take onboard the remaining troops. Seeing their chance for a final revenge, the Narn waited until the garrison had boarded the transports and then sent every captured Centri fighter against them. The Centauri fighter escort attempted to repel the incoming fighters but was unable to stop them and was subsequently wiped out. The transports soon followed as over two thousand Centauri troops were incinerated. Seeing the situaiton as totally lost, the Halberd's captain ordered her to turn about and clear orbit for a jump when three heavy missiles screamed out of the low atmosphere to impact her engines. Crippled, the Halberd settled back into a holding orbit where Narn troops boarded her and captured the crew for interrogation. Within days, a new Narn government had been founded calling itself the Narn Regime and its ruling body, the Kah'ri, had ordered the dismantling of all Centauri warships to reverse-engineer them and create a purly Narn fleet of warships. By 2215, the Narn Imperial Fleet was a reality.
The expansion of the Narn Regime mirrored the rise of the Centauri Republic in almost every way. The Imperial Fleet surged outward to conquer the closest systems to Narn. By 2230 the Narn Regime had come into contact with almost every other major power in the galaxy and had entered its first interstellar war against the Dilgar Empire. Seeing a chance to expand their borders further, the Narn had entered the war thinking that the Dilgar had almost been exterminated. However, they were quickly beaten back by the Dilgar and colony on J'thall was captured. When the Imperial Fleet returned to liberate the planet, they found that the entire population had been used as test subjects for the Dilgar medical experiments. Despite the renewed sense of hatred for the Dilgar, the war went poorly until the Battle of Gorash in 2231 when the combined League-Narn fleet came to fight the Dilgar invasion force headed for Narn. The opening stages saw the loss of several key vessels including the Narn flagship and the
Avioki Cruiser Juldak which was serving as fleet coordinator and battle command. The combined fleet was on the verge of a total rout when jump points opened behind the Dilgar fleet and the rear ships in the formation detonated amongst a hail of pulse cannon fire. Earth Alliance warships exited and caught the Dilgar fleet in a cross fire, annihilating the Dilgar warships. Having regained the initiative, the combined and Earth Alliance fleets went onto the offensive, destroying several Dilgar fleets before arrivng at the Dilgar homeworld. Advancing to the edge of the defense grids, the Narn fleet began to bombard the planet from orbit, heavy lasers burning away the atmosphere and incineration entire cities within seconds. While the Earth Alliance and League fleets stood off, the Narn wiped out the Dilgar, venting their pent up hatred one one massive strike.
With the Dilgar War over, the Narn Regime began to rebuild again, putting back together their shattered colonies and constructing new warships to replace those lost to the Dilgar. Their confidence bolstered by their victory over the Dilgar, the Narn Imperial Fleet set its sights on the planet of N'chak'fah, the Gaim Homeworld. Thinking that the conquest of the low-tech Gaim would send a signal of strength to the other interstellar governments, the invasion went ahead as planned by things quickly fell apart. With the atmosphere of Gaim being composed mainly of heavy gasses which prevented Narn plasma-based weapons from working correctly, the Narn were caught totally by surprise and the first wave was slaughtered by the genetically-engineered warriors of the Gaim hive queens. Surface-based launchers then began firing nuclear-based missiles into orbit which obliterated most of the Narn transports and put an end to the invasion attempt. With losses well past the point of acceptability, the Narn withdrew from the system and sued for peace with the League of Non-Alligned Worlds.
At the same time, the Narn entered into an agreement of mutual assistance with the Earth Alliance, comitting themselves to a position which was to become dangerous during the Earth-Minbari War when the Minbari Federation demanded that the Narn cease their sales of heavy weapons to the Earth Alliance. With their usual arrogance, the Narn rebuffed the Minbari and the gamble paid off as the Minbari didn't have enough troops to wage two wars at once against an allied front. With the end of the war, Narn sales still remained strong and relations between the Earth Alliance and the Narn Regime floruished. It was not until 2259 that the ties between the two powers began to unravel.
With the outbreak of the Narn-Centauri War, the Narn Regime made pleas for aid from the Earth Alliance and the League. However, because of mounting internal problems the Earth Alliance refused the Narn advances and President Clark ordered the External Office to look into securing a treaty with the Centauri Republic. Barefet of allies, the Narn fought against the numerically superior Centauri with mounting desperation, always trying to find a weakness int the Centauri's armor. However, because of the low number of Narn warships and the aid fo the Shadows to the Centauri, the Narn Regime was almost always on the defensive. The last desperate gasp came in the Gorash System when Warmaster G'sten led a seventeen-ship attack force in a bid to cut the Centauri supply lines and secure Narn from an invasion. Unfortunately, the attack force was annihilated under mysterious circumstances, though it is now beleived that Shadow forces were to blame. Regardless, Narn was left undefended and the Centauri Fleet, led by the Cruiser
Valarius, dropped out of hyperspace and opened fire with Mass Drivers which devestated the surface and killed almost one third of the Narn population. For the second time in a century, Centauri occupation troops were on the surface of Narn.
The second time of occupation by the Centauri was far more brutal than the first as terrible acts of subjugation were carried out. The atmosphere polluted by dirt and ask thrown up during the Centauri bombardment, the entire agricultural base had been wiped out and the Narn subsisted on imported food smuggled in from the Minbari and the Earth Alliance. Once again, the Resistance flourished and sabotage became the order of the day, even in the face of mass executions of women and children by the Centauri ground forces. Finally, the Resistance was able to work out a backroom deal with a group of Centauri Lords led by Londo Mollari which granted Narn freedom in return for the Narn assassinating Emperor Cartagia, the current Centauri ruler. G'Kar, the former ambassador to Babylon 5, led the assassination and gave cover while Mollari was able to stab Cartagia in the back and end the insane Emperor's rule. As promised, the Centauri withdrew from the surface of Narn and granted the Regime almost all of its worlds back. Abriiga and several others were retained for repayment purposes, a fact which galls most Narn to this day.
With Narn once again freed from Centauri rule and the Narn Regime back in power, the Narn people have begun to retake their place in the stars. However, vengeance has once again become to predominant feeling among the populace. Once more, the Narn Regime is moving toward a stance of war, this time for all out revenge against the Centauri. G'Kar, the great leader and figurehead of Narn society, has dissapeared from sight. With no peace-minded leader in sight, only time will tell if cooler heads prevail.
