Florida State Flag

state flag The state flag is white with crossed red bars.  In the center of the flag is the state seal.  It shows the sun over a hill.  It shows palm trees and a boat.  It also shows an Indian girl scattering flowers.  On the seal is the motto, "In God We Trust."

The mockingbird is our state bird.  It "mocks" the songs of other birds.  Sometimes it will improve on another bird's song.  It may add some trills of its own.  It is seen in all parts of the state.  People enjoy its songs.

Stephen Foster never lived in Florida.  But he has been honored by the state.  At White Springs there is a park honoring him.  There you will see pictures.  They tell the stories of Foster's songs.  The name of the river is "Suwannee."  But Foster used the name "Swanee River."

The orange blossom is the state flower.  Our state is known worldwide for citrus fruits.  Much of the state's wealth comes from selling citrus fruits.

The sabal palm is the state tree.  It is also known as the cabbage palm.  It grows to be 80 feet tall.  The leaves are fan-shaped and shiny.  The palm can be seen in all parts of the state.
