| Los Irlandeses en México una breve historia No es muy conocido que los Irlandeses participaron desde temprano en la colonia española. A principios de los 1600 varios Irlandeses quienes servian en una nave mercantíl inglesa fueron naufragos en Veracrúz. Desafortunadamente la Inquisición los descubrió y los confundió con "ingleses luteranos." Otros Irlandeses encontraron mejor suerte, or por lo menos mejor fama, en México Hugh O'Connor Varios de los burócratas y soldados quienes representaron el gobierno de España en la Nueva España durante el siglo XVIII fueron irlandeses o de sangre irlandesa. Entre ellos, Hugh O'Connor, dublinense, llegó a ser gobernador de la región de Texas y comandante militar del la frontera norte de la colonia. Fundó la Ciudad de Tucson en lo que ahora es Arizona William Lamport,el Zorro Otro irlandés notorio en la historia de México fue William Lamport, originario de Wexford, Irlanda. Nacido en una familia acomodada y educado en Inglaterra Lamport fue deportado de Inglaterra por sus simpatias católicas. Se volvió pirata victimizando naves inglesas.Después de esto se unió a la Brigada Irlandesa apoyando España en su guerra contra Francia. A los veinteicinco años se radica en España latinizando su nombre a Guillen Lombardo. Un escándalo amoroso lo obligó a huirse a México donde fué conmovido por la condición de los indigenas y los esclavos africanos.Fué acusado de conspirar en contra del gobierno y fué encarcelado. Luego de diez años de prisión Lombardo escapó. Lombardo vivió casi una década como fugitivo y durante este periodo los cuentos de el zorro nacen entre las clases populares. En el año 1652 sorprenden a El Zorro en la cama de la esposa del virrey. Eventualmente la Inquisición lo sentencia a la hoguera. Cuenta la leyenda que El Zorro se burló de sus captores ahorcandose con la misma soga que debiera atarlo ala hoguera. |
| The Irish in Mexico a brief history It is not widely known that the Irish were in Mexico during the early days of the colony. In the early 1600's several Irish who were servants on an English merchant ship were shipwrecked in Veracruz. Unfortunately the Spanish Inquisition found them and mistook them for "English Lutherans." Other Irish had better luck and fame in Mexico. Hugh O'Connor Several of the beaurocrats and soldiers who represented Spain in Nueva España(Mexico) in the 18th century were Irish or of Irish descent. One of the most notable among them was Dublin born Hugh O'Connor who became governor of the region of Texas and comandate of the northen frontier. He also founded what later became Tucson, Arizona. William Lamport, el Zorro Another famous Irishman in México's past was William Lamport of Wexford, Ireland. Born in 1615 to a wealthy family and educated in England Lamport was pretty much banished due to his Catholic sympathies. After this he became a pirate, attacking English vessels and later joined the Irish Brigade in the Spanish war against France. At the age of twenty-five he went to Spain where he latinized his name to Guillem Lombardo. Apparently a scandalous love affair caused him to flee to Mexico where he was moved by the poverty and degradation of the indians and blacks.He was accused of plotting a war of independence against the government and this lead to imprisonment. After ten years in prison he escaped. Nearly a decade as a fugitive spawned tales among the lower classes of el zorro, the fox. In 1652 Lamport was caught in bed with the wife of the Spanish viceroy.He eventually was sentenced by the Inquisition to die, burned at the stake, but legend says that he beat his executioners to the punch by hanging himself with the very ropes that were to tie him to the stake. |
