| The Obregón Legend This is a fairly well known legend. There are several families in Mexico who have the surname Obregón. Different versions vary as to how and when they arrived in Mexico yet all agree that at least some of these families descend from O'Briens who came to Mexico. Supposedly the Mexicans were unable to pronounce the name so the family changed it to a more pronounceable Obregón. There is really no documentation of this; absolutely no hard proof of it. It is true that there are families in Spain who go back to before the 16th century when many Irish nobles began to seek asylum there. Also it is true that most Mexicans have a very difficult time pronouncing the name Brian the way we normally pronounce it; the result often sounding like "brigh john" rhyming with "high john." However my Mexican wife only recently told me that she thinks there may be something to it as she knows of families who spell their name Obregón yet pronounce it " oh-BREG-ohn." Normally it is pronounced "oh-bre-GOHN." Mexico's most famous Obregón was Álvaro Obregón, who was twice elected president and was assassinated before he could assume office a second time. |
| La Leyenda Obregón Según esta conocida leyenda algunas de las familias de apellido Obregón que hay en México descienden de una familia O'Brien que inmigró a México. Hay diferentes versiones pero todas versiones corresponden en que los Mexicanos no podian pronunciar O'Brien. Para acomodar a los locales la familia cambió su apellido a Obregón. No hay ningún documento que sostenga esta hipótesis. Lo que sí es cierto es que el apellido Obregón existia en España antes de la diáspora de la nobleza irlandesa hacia aquél país empezara en el siglo XVI. Tambien es cierto que a la mayoria de los Mexicanos actuales les cuesta trabajo pronunciar Brian de la manera que se pronuncia en Irlanda y los paises de habla inglés. Sinembargo mi esposa mexicana recientemente me contó que ha conocido a gente que tiene el apellido Obregón y lo pronuncia con enfásis en la segunda sílaba: "o-BREG-on" El más famoso Obregón de México fué Álvaro Obregón; dos veces eligido presidente y asesinado antes de iniciar la segunda gestión presidencial. |
