Public Canoe Access on the Eklhorn River

The Public - Private Partnership for Flood Control

Nebraska's structure for managing
natural resources on a
watershed basis is unique in the nation.

The increasing demand from the public for canoe access on the Elkhorn River prompted the NRD to commission a feasibility study.  Beringer Ciaccio Dennell Mabrey (BCDM, Inc) successfully completed the study which prioritized three sites in the metro area.
Highway 64/West Maple Street bridge near Waterloo
      Q Street
      Highway 6/Dodge Street bridge

The first site, at Highway 64 near Waterloo, is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled to begin in late fall 2005.
In 1997, Dam Site 6 Newport Landing near Bennington was the first PPP developed for flood conrol in the 402 square-mile Papio watershed.  Current and ongoing negotiations for PPPs on three Papio watershed flood control reservoirs include two in Douglas County and one in Sarpy County.
