| Nebraska's structure for managing natural resources on a watershed basis is unique in the nation. |
| The increasing demand from the public for canoe access on the Elkhorn River prompted the NRD to commission a feasibility study. Beringer Ciaccio Dennell Mabrey (BCDM, Inc) successfully completed the study which prioritized three sites in the metro area. |

| The first site, at Highway 64 near Waterloo, is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled to begin in late fall 2005. |
| In 1997, Dam Site 6 Newport Landing near Bennington was the first PPP developed for flood conrol in the 402 square-mile Papio watershed. Current and ongoing negotiations for PPPs on three Papio watershed flood control reservoirs include two in Douglas County and one in Sarpy County. |
