BREED DESCRIPTION
Of medium size, the Barnevelder slightly resembles the Wyandotte or New Hampshire. The most notable differences are the longer shanks and the fairly long neck that is carried more erect, making the breast appear much higher than the abdomen. The back is of medium length and broad between the shoulders. The breast and abdomen are deep, broad and full. The tail is full and carried high though slightly backwards with beautifully rounded, broad and medium long sickles that cover the main tail feathers.

The head is of medium size, broad and deep with a red skin. The powerful beak is yellow with a horn-colored overlay on the upper side. The bright red single comb is of medium size, carried upright and well serrated with five points. The longish earlobes and the medium sized wattles are bright red in colour.

The yellow, medium sized legs are placed well apart and the yellow toes have horn-coloured nails. The plumage is close and the saddle hackles are well developed.

CHARACTERISTICS

The Barnevelder is a lively, active and friendly breed that is at its best in a well-built house. The egg production is high even through the winter months. The eggs are fairly big and brown-coloured and the average weight is 60 grams. They rarely become broody. The chicks grow well although they take some time to feather up completely.

WEIGHT

Depending on sex, variety and age, they weigh around 2750 to 3500 grams.

VARIETIES

Apart from the double-laced colour (red-brown with black, beetle green double lacing), Barnevelders are also known in blue laced, white and black.
