15 Air Force's servicemen arrested over Jakarta police station
raid
JAKARTA (JP): Commander of the Military Police of the Indonesian Military (TNI)
headquarters Maj. Gen. Sulaiman A.B. disclosed here on Thursday that his office has
arrested 15 to 20 servicemen of the Indonesian Air Force, Antara reported.
The servicemen were arrested for being suspected of involvement in the raid of a
police station in Makassar village in East Jakarta at dawn on Wednesday, killing one
policeman and seriously injuring two others.
"The suspects are in the custody of the Military Police division of the Air Force
headquarters. After undergoing preliminary examination, they will be handed over to
the Jakarta Military Police," Sulaiman told journalists on the sidelines of the 42nd
anniversary celebration of the Army's Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) at the
Senayan Sports Center here.
"Whether the suspects will be discharged from military duty, that depends on the Air
Force chief. The criminal charges of murder in the incident will however be handled
according to the criminal code," he said.
Sulaiman, however, refused to divulge the identities of the suspects. "They come from
various Air Force units, but mostly from the Workshop and Material division," he said.
According to him, the incident was triggered by some misunderstanding. He said
some Air Force servicemen had been found drunk and were arrested by the local
police. "The case had not been given a thorough solution, and this instigated the
tragedy," the military police chief said.
