Kontras says military involved in attack on JSC office
BANDA ACEH (JP): An Army-backed militia and soldiers were involved in Monday's
attack on the office of a peace monitoring team in Aceh province, a human rights
group said Friday.
The Aceh chapter of the Commission on Missing Persons and Victims of Violence
(Kontras) made the allegation in a report on the attack on the office of the Joint
Security Committee (JSC) at Takengon in Central Aceh, AFP reported.
Kontras said members of Kostrad (the Army strategic reserve)had escorted a group of
500 people to an area in Takengon to join another 2,500 protesters before they
marched to the office.
It said at least two Kostrad soldiers, dressed in civilian clothes, were seen urging the
mob to burn the building and attack the peace monitors.
Of the 3,000 men at the scene, Kontras said 400 were Java-based militiamen who
came from four villages around Takengon and were armed and trained by the military.
