New Zealand steps up travel warning to RI
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (JP): The New Zealand government reissued an official
advisory against travel to Indonesia on Monday, warning that widespread
demonstrations could follow an attack on Iraq, DPA reported.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is advising New Zealanders against all tourist
and non-essential travel to anywhere in Indonesia, saying, "It is possible that protest
activity will extend beyond peaceful actions."
It advises specifically against all travel to Aceh, West Papua, Sulawesi and the Belu
district, including the border area of West Timor and notes a state of civil emergency
in the Maluku Islands, where foreigners are forbidden entry.
The ministry urged New Zealanders resident in Indonesia to observe a high level of
security awareness and avoid places where westerners gather such as clubs, bars,
shopping malls, tourist resorts and places of worship.
It noted that there may be threats against buildings and symbols of the government of
Indonesia and said these and areas of cultural or historical significance should also be
avoided.
