» CHAPTER TWO «

May 31st '95- Day after Katie's Graduation

"Happy B-day!" Alexis screamed.

Katie was thrilled to see her best friend standing in the doorway.

"Hey, thanx a bunch! My parents were about to tell me something before the doorbell rang," said Katie.

"Oh, want me to stay?" said Alexis.

"Yeah, please. Come sit down," said Katie as she led her into the living room.

"Hey, Alex! Well, I guess it's better that you're here," her Mom said. Alexis and Katie give questioning looks. Her  parents tensed up and seemed unsure about what they were going to say.

Katie's dad spoke up. "Katie, I'm just going to come out with it. You are adopted. We're not your biological parents. Please don't get mad. We meant to tell you earlier, but you grew up too fast."

Katie sat there in shock. If it wasn't for her best friend, she would have passed out. Her parents that she knew and loved for 17 years wasn't her real parents. She wanted to burst out in tears, but then again she wanted to run and hug them.

"I'm a little disappointed, Dad, but I see your point and understand. I just want you to know I will always love you."  The Jones family and Alexis searched for three weeks for Katie's mother. Alexis finds out from the adoption agency that Katie's mom's name is Janet Smith. Katie decides to call her with the whole family beside her. She arranges to meet her Mom in a week and spend the summer with her. Alexis comes along. Katie feels unsure and has a nagging feeling that their lives are about to change.
