Chapter Six: Problem Solving

With this Set of Activities you will:

review some of the vocabulary used in the articles in the chapter
review the use of modal auxiliaries
practice the use of if- and unless-clauses
review, define, and practice the use of the different components in a problem solving text

There are five different kinds of activities:

Fill-in-the-blank : fill in the missing word
Multiple Choice : choose the best possible answer to the question
Crossword Puzzle : answer the questions or complete the statements
Matching : find the right match from among the different options
UnScramble : put mixed up words or phrases in the right order

Activities

1. Cyberspace		Fill-in-the-blank exercise. Vocabulary related to cyberspace. This vocabulary is from one of the articles in the chapter. They are very useful to know as the computer is used a lot for academic studies.
2. Computers		Crossword Puzzle with vocabulary related to computers and cyberspace. You will also practice word families.
3. Modal Aux		Multiple Choice exercise.You can practice the use of modal auxiliaries here. How do we use them and for which purpose. This will help you when giving suggestions in writing problem-solving articles.
4. Modals		Fill-in-the-blank exercise on modal auxiliaries. Learn more about the use of modal auxiliaries.
5. Scrambled modals		UnScramble exercise.The words in the sentences are scrambled. Rewrite the sentences putting the words in the right order. Where is the modal auxiliary placed in a sentence?
6. Crossword		Crossword Puzzle. More practice with modal auxiliaries. How do we use them?
7. Match If-Clauses		Matching exercise. Complete the if-clauses with the main clauses in the option boxes.
8. Unscramble if-clauses		UnScramble exercise. Here you can practice putting sentences in order, and you will be practicing if-clauses to help you in preparing for the use of them in your writing in this chapter.
9. Match Unless Clauses		Matching exercise. Complete the unless-clauses with the main clauses in the option boxes.
10. Scrambled Unless Clauses		UnScramble exercise. The words in the sentences are scrambled. Rewrite the sentences and practice the use of the unless-clauses.
11. Solution		Fill-in-the-blank exercise in which you can practice the use of different vocabulary related to the steps in a problem solving article.
12. Cr.Puzzle		Crossword Puzzle to practice the different vocabulary related to a problem solving article.
13. Problem Solving		Matching exercise. Match the different section topics in a problem solving text with the description of the content of each section. This will help you to identify the sections of a problem solving text.
14. Scramble of Steps		UnScramble exercise. The different steps are scrambled. Put them in the order in which you will most probably find them in texts.
15. Labeling Paragraphs		Multiple Choice exercise in which you will see parts of a text and are asked to label them.
16. Order the paragraphs		Multiple Choice exerciseThe paragrpahs of the text are scrambled. You need to find the right order of the paragraphs.
