A STORY OF MAGIC After reading over 2,000 pieces of XWP fanfic it is honestly rare these days for a story to so thoroughly captivate me that I spend the day at work trying to sneak in chapters. C.L.'s latest is such a story. Enchanting, delightful, clever, HILARIOUS...I could just go on and on about this tale. It is the type of story that will have you settling back with a HUGE grin when you finish it and just thinking..."Damn that was good!!". The tale begins in a tavern with the Warrior Princess and her trusty bard having a couple (well...more like a whole bunch) of drinks with their Amazon buddies Ephiny and Solari when they learn of a lucrative staff competition scheduled to take place nearby. Hoping to make some quick dinars, Xena decides to enter only she proceeds to stick one booted foot DEEP down her throat when she also goes on to prohibit her partner from entering. Hoping to avoid a physical confrontation with the bard, she enters into a verbal one and of course, promptly looses. Accompanied by their two Amazon friends, our two heroines then head for the competition where it is not the Destroyer of Nations that steps up to the challenge - but the Bilious Green Wonder from Potato!! (told yah this is fun :) Amidst staff battles, HUGE Bulgarian opponents, jealous old lovers and these strange fans who go around following the Gabster's every movement (imagine that!), the two find themselves increasingly overwhelmed by the pull of their hearts - enveloped in the very special magic of a feeling called love. This is a long story but trust me folks - read EVERY sentence because just about every other line is either hysterical or sweetly meaningful - quite reminiscent of episodes like A DAY IN THE LIFE. There's one scene in particular that I warn you is likely to elicit a cheer of delight from you even if you're in public (personal experience on that one <:) C.L. characterizations from Xena to the bard to the Amazons and the guest stars are outstanding but without question - my FAVORITE character in this entire tale - HAS to be the narrator! Beyond astute, that little narrative voice will keep you in stiches through most of this. A STORY OF MAGIC captures quite well indeed the magic of fanfic guys - it takes characters we love, combines them with the imagination of a very gifted bard and creates a final product that is every bit as entertaining and fun as the series that long ago captured our hearts. Feeling melancholy over the changes in her life and in herself, the bard-turned-warrior decides to look for new inspiration to try to reignite the spark that once gave life to her imagination and stories. She finds it in the unacknowledged attraction between two young Amazons. Curious as to what is keeping the two from embracing that attraction, the bard decides to investigate only to soon find herself in a liiiiittle bit of a bind when a case of puppy love complicates matter and suddenly those rusty storytelling skills may be the only thing that can save the day. Cath does a nice job here with the Xena/Gab relationship, giving it an easy casualness that comes across as very natural for these two. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, REVISITED One of our veteran bards returns with a wonderful new story that reveals what we didn't see during the episode BEEN THERE, DONE THAT as the repeating day has some very unexpected consequences for Xena, aFording her the opportunity to at last learn the truth about the bard's feelings for her but leaving her with a guilty conscience and some unforseen regrets in the process. Catherine does a really nice job here outlining Xena's feelings and thoughts as the warrior struggles to deal with emotions she has little experience with. Though more subtly drawn, Gabrielle's characterization is also well-crafted showing an underlying consistency in her own feelings for her partner despite the different circumstances we see her in. Despite the apparent "taming of the warlord" theme that her stories tend to give the Xena/Gabby relationship, there is a quality in the romance that makes it very funny and very sweet. This latest effort is a sequel to TURNING TABLES which in turn is a sequel of sorts to COMPARING NOTES so ideally you should read both of those EXCELLENT stories before tackling this one. As WINNING SMILES opens, the warrior is extracting sweet revenge on her bard for a recent humiliation. They are on their way to a festival Hercules and Salmoneous have organized to help for charity. It is an event ripe with possibilities where Gabby will find her hands full keeping the Warrior Princess from murdering pigs and kids even as she convinces her to "participate" in the fun. This is a MUST READ that will put a winning smile on your face! The combination gives way to a very emotional story in which neither can deny the feelings they share any longer. I especially loved the Eve and Virgil portrayals here: a preachy, annoyingly earnest Eve and a Virgil who is a lot like his daddy. It’s clever; it’s biting; it’s a whole lot of fun. The choice is a difficult one to accept for Gabrielle's family but for the bard - there is no other choice. CN uses a shifting point-of-view technique here that is nicely effective as she reveals the thoughts of the different players. THE TAVERN This new offering from the bard who brought us one of my favorite new stories this year, ILLUMINATIONS OF THE SOUL is a warlord/slave tale that firmly establishes Liz's fiction as among the most passionate in XWP alt. fiction today. The tale begins with Gabrielle secretly following Xena into a tavern where the young bard soon realizes why the warrior didn't want her to come along. Having uncovered the true nature of the establishment as a brothel staffed mostly with slaves, Xena is determined to put an end to the place only now the success of that plan doesn't just depend on her - but also on how well a certain bard can play the role of submissive slave. Liz's treatment of the Xena/Gabrielle relationship is a remarkably effective combination of love, tenderness and sizzling sensuality. This is one to be avoided at work and probably at most other public places too but a definite MUST READ! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
