The Vines. What's the Deal?!
Let me start this off by stating that I am a HUGE Vines fan. Therefore when I realised my $35 tickets to Incubus and The Vines, were only good for Incubus and replacement opening band, Sparta, I was not a happy camper to say the least. I was hearing rumors everywhere that the Vines pulled out or that the Vines were breaking up. I defended them, thinking that if such a thing happened they would post it on their site or I'd atleast find some confirmed report, somewhere. Well I was mistaken. After searching quite a while for a better Vines news source then my pathetic hometown rock station, x-treme radio, I found one. And the result was not good.

The story went like this...Vine's bassist, Patrick Matthews, and singer-songwriter-guitarist Craig Nicholls got into an arguement on stage before a gig in Sydney,  which was apparently the cause of the bassist walking off the stage, never to return during the hour long set. Craig however was later said to have wrecked a photographer's equipment during the concert, ((pulling an Axl Rose, are we?)).

That incident caused the Vines to cancel their US tour with Incubus. A spokesperson said, "The decision to cancel the tour has been made for the band to take a break and deal with mental and physical exhaustion issues they currently face." The Vines then canceled their Reading and Leeds gigs in the UK.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I heard rumors of a break up. Patrick however denied that the band was breaking up, but Craig hasn't commented on this to my knowledge. Though many magazines are reporting that most-likely a break up will occur. Who to believe? Currently Pattrick is standing in for Youth Group's bassist on their Australian tour, while Craig is out of the spotlight, hopefully just for now.

The Vines are scheduled to start playing again in 2005, so only time will tell. The Vines have proven that they are different from the many 'the' bands many times with their antics, live shows, and amazing albums. And yes, I said album
s, I am a fan of both Highly Evolved and Winning Days. I have my opinions of which is better, but I think that Winning Days is a much better album then The Hives have ever made. Hopefully they'll amaze me again and come back.
Update on the Vines (see bottom of page)
Update:
A lot has happened since the Vines cancelled their remaining shows back in June. Craig Nicholls was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, which is a mild form of autism. People with Asperger's can not tolerate change, have obsessive-compulsive routines, do not know how to react to social situations, are sensitive to light or sound, and are usually obsessed with a particular interest or hobby. Most with Asperger's have a very high intelligence level and usually focus all their attention on music or art. Many people with Asperger's are usually considered socially inept or eccentric.

Obviously this would eliminate any full time touring after releasing a record, which was previously stated on the vines official website
http://www.thevines.com and NME. So don't expect any more shows, atleast not for a while if ever.

The good news? The Vines are staying together! The Vines have confirmed that they will NOT break up and they are currently getting ready to record their third album. Though Capitol, their record label, has made it clear that there is to be no set day of release or deadlines for new material, meaning this may take a while.
