Frengers Mew Ok, I know what you're thinking, "Who is Mew and what are frengers?" Well frengers are 'not quite friends but not quite strangers'. And Mew is a dream-pop band that hails from Denmark. Mew is also shockingly original, making them very hard to compare with other bands. However, I will attempt it. I would have to say that Mew sounds a lot like the Flaming Lips or the early 90's shoegazer band Ride, but with much, much softer vocals. Mew's singer-songwriter-guitarist, Jonas Bjerre, has an extremely soft voice that will make you feel like you're walking on clouds. The rest of their music bares a small resimbulance to Pink Floyd or the older German band Harmonia, for its pychedelic vibe. Mew also, therefore, sounds a little like the Secret Machines but is way more mellow. The best tracks? The first track, "Am I Wry? No", starts the album off with a bang. While the last song, "Comforting Sounds" will leave you wishing the album would never end. Their website, www.mewsite.com, has additional information and MP3s, so check it out. Final Verdict? ****1/2

Tour Reviews... The Killers w/ The Walkmen September 19th: The Walkmen were pretty horrible to say the least. The redifined the phrase 'noise guitar', I couldn't understand anything they were saying and the lead singer was spazzing out will attempting to 'sing' if you could call it that. The bassist dropped his bass atleast twice and had to read off sheet music. The Killers were great, though. The lead singer, Brandon Flowers, put on a good show: playing the keyboards, singing, posing for photos, and spinning the mike around. The band was also very good too. They played their whole album, Hot Fuss, plus a song called 'It's Indie Rock N' Roll For Me" which was a huge hit for the crowd. The killers went from an unknown band here in their hometown of Vegas to selling out the local House of Blues, thats an accomplishment. **** Taking Back Sunday w/ Fallout Boy, Matchbook Romance, and The Sleeping: October 17th This was the shittiest concert I have ever been to. The Sleeping is the worst band ever, they attempt to mix death metal and emo (not a good idea) , at the concert they attempted to get the crowd going by starting a chant that went like this, "Yo, shits going down!". The crowd at the House of Blues was also equally horrible, preppy high school (some middle school) bitchy girls with their unnaturally skinny boyfriends hanging on their waist, they all were probably Hanson fans who just jumped on the next bandwagon, which happens to be emo. Matchbook Romance wasn't good either though they came no where near the sleeping's level of horribleness. Fallout Boy was fairly boring, but had a couple decent songs. Finally after about 3hrs of torture Taking Back Sunday came on and I was saved. They put on an good show, though they played a lot of new songs, which I don't particularly like. They should consider more about who they tour with next time because the opening bands definitely put a damper on the show. *1/2 The Faint w/ TV on the Radio and Beep Beep: November 16th Beep Beep is a very odd band. They have a singer that i can only describe as a screeching crow, and that is being nice. The other vocalist/guitarist thought he ought to join in on the screeching which just made it worse. But moving on, tv on radio. Wow they are great, got the crowd into a pyschedelic frenzy (or was that just the marijuana...). They surely made a fan out of me. Finally the Faint, what can I say awesome band and an awesome show. They played over an hour long set plus an encore not to mention they had a video playing right along with the music. What more could you ask for? ****1/2
With the Lights Out Nirvana Let me start this off by stating: I am a HUGE nirvana fan. Therefore this review is going to be very biased, but really what isn't? Anyway to continue, the box set includes: three music discs of 81 tracks - 68 previously unreleased, a dvd of rare concert fotage and rare videos, and a 60 page booklet about Nirvana's entire career. Welcome to heaven. The first disc is mostly Bleach-era recordings that are for the most part truly unreleased and rare. There are many heavy tracks on this disc, what grunge is known for. Stellar tracks include Mrs. Butterworth, Grey Goose, and Even in his Youth. The second disc picks up where Bleach left off and carries you to Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana's claim to fame. Kurt Cobain's knack for thoughtful flowing songs starts to become apparent as the CD continues to play. The best tracks are Old Age, which was previously Impossible and yes I mean impossible to find; Opinion; and Oh the Guilt. The third disc, my personal favorite, covers everything from Nevermind to Kurt's final months. The first thing I noticed was the presence of TWO rape mes, the second one including the crys of Frances Cobain, Kurt's daughter, in the background. My favorite song of all time, Sappy, is also included on this disc! The dvd is also wonderful, my favorite part being the last scene where the band preforms Seasons in the Sun, with Kurt on drums, Dave on bass, and Krist on guitar. Also another interesting fact if you click on the name 'Shayne Stacy' in the Thank You's section at the end of the dvd, there is hidden fotage, yeah just thought I'd mention it. *****
