beyond the dogpark
Before setting out for western destinations, we take a short trip through several nearby states.  In West Virginia, Griffin and I cautiously explore a site of WWII military exercises where live mortars still exist.  In western Massachusetts, we visit the Peace Pagoda, a massive white Buddhist shrine overlooking the Pioneer Valley.  Offering balance to our visit to the WWII bombing site, I learn from monks at the Pagoda that the shrine is intended to promote non-violence and was built in reaction to the bombing of Hiroshima.

On this short trip I confirm that Griffin travels well and I learn how best to drive, maintain and live in The Chief.  We return to Arlington to say goodbye to my parents and friends before heading off on a much longer journey.
