My orthopedist pronounces me fit for travel and I drive to Wyoming, arriving in Laramie just in time to watch the town's Jubilee Days parade. Griffin draws much attention and commentary as he barks ceaselessly at the many horses that pass. We camp at the nearby Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and I am rewarded with commanding views of the lake-dotted countryside when I hike to the boulder field that caps Medicine Bow peak. Near Jackson, The Chief and her contents clatter with great volume and many rhythms as we drive a long, washboarded road to a camp overlooking the National Elk Refuge. We view the sights of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, including the geysers and hot springs that warn of greater thermal dangers beneath the earth's crust. Driving through the mountains has taken its toll on The Chief's brakes; driving downhill has become an unwelcome adventure. I learn from other motorists a method for locating a dependable garage and I travel to Billings, Montana for auto repairs. |
