beyond the dogpark I reach the Canadian border a few miles outside the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.  While searching The Chief, customs officers confiscate my pepper spray.  I debate their actions by noting that park personnel on both sides of the border recommend the use of pepper spray in certain wildlife scenarios.  Unimpressed with my logic, an officer gives me the option of returning home.  I trade my weapon for a receipt and visit the Canadian side of the park.

Griffin and I run with a hashing club in Calgary and I receive a great deal of beer and travel advice.  We visit several places in the Canadian Rockies including Kananaskis country and Banff.  In Jasper, I am thrilled to hike with Griffin on a trail that leads onto a glacier--I've never seen one before, let alone stood on one.

In Dawson Creek, BC we reach mile zero of the Alaska Highway.  We spend several long days on the challenging road, enjoying the gradually-changing scenery while dodging wildlife and logging trucks.
