We camp and hike among the Dr. Seuss-book scenery of Joshua Tree National Park. I stop at an Internet café in Las Vegas where I am trapped sitting next to a man who explains in great detail that a planet will soon pass close to the earth and cause various catastrophes including a dramatic repositioning of our magnetic poles. I drive The Chief up the Colorado Plateau, a large uplift covering portions of Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. We hike extensively in Zion National Park where for the second time in a month I find myself clinging to metal chains above sheer cliffs. I read a book that explains the geological features of the area and I am delighted to explore the excellent examples provided by Bryce Canyon, the Grand Staircase, Capitol Reef, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon. |
