The dreadnought was mainly built as a self sufficient reconnaissance ship and conveyer of imperial power to colonies on the eastern fringe close to the edge of the Astronomican’s guiding light. Most of the dreadnought’s systems are of archaic design from long lost STCs, so old that tech adepts cannot comprehend the intricate technologies that comprise the dreadnought. The size of the dreadnought allowed it to be built with massive reactors which eliminated the need for fuel. Ammo and food are grown or replicated onboard. Raw materials are acquired by deploying mining equipment on asteroids and nearby planets, which in turn decreased the need for infrastructure and gave it the ability to operate alone without the need of smaller escort ships.
To the general public only a few were speculated of being built and none were ever known to exist outside of myth. The fact that they operated so far from civilization made them an unseen or very rare sight. Only the highest ranking naval officers and secretive organizations ever knew of its existence and whereabouts.
Though the dreadnoughts were designed to act independently, some were known to be attached as flagships to fleets.
