Anxiety
Situation Anxiety-based on the environment in which you are in. An example
is doing something for the first time.
Ways to Overcome Situation Anxiety (one of the test questions)
-practice speech or presentation many times
-practice out loud
-rehearse in environment of speech
-revisit environment
-drive to presentation
-park a little bit away
-be on time/15 minutes early
-warm up/physically-exercise and stretch
-have a humorous introduction
-look for non-verbal feedback from audience, such as head nodding or bored
stares
Ways to Overcome Trait Anxiety
Trait Anxiety-internal anxiety. Based on feelings of inadequacy, usually due
to poor past
performances or low-self image/self esteem.
"The pros have taught their butterflies to fly in formation". -Dr. Tyler.
-often people are not aware that you have trait anxiety
-think positively self-fulfilling Prophecy-SFP
-positive imaging
-know the material on which you are presenting, makes you less nervous and
appear more
comfortable
-plan the presentation
-avoid jumping to conclusions during presentation (example, such as thinking
"you’re terrible" to
yourself)

Presentations' starting next week-he is going to have us sign up then.
-Presentation Guidelines
-the presentation should be about 5 minutes.
-the first two minutes -talk about the importance of the topic you chose.
-third minute-talk about the sources you used, such as library articles,
Internet websites, et cetera.
-fourth minute-talk about the findings of your presentation-what suprised
you, what you found to
be most valuable in your research.
-last minute-project your paper-where the subject is headed in the future.
Ways to Enhance Presentation
-videotape yourself so you will be more comfortable when the time comes.
-visual aids-ask him first if you can use transparencies.
-Types of Visual Aids
-transparencies
-handouts
-PowerPoint sideshow
Remember, visual aids should be no more than 25% of presentation. To much or
to little take
away from the content itself.

The quiz will be on the reserved article "Barriers and Gateways to
Communications"
-Quiz is take-home and will be composed of report writing.
Report Writing
-There is two kinds of reports, informational and analytical
(The article is written by two authors and split into two parts)
-Part One of the article will be an informational report-abstract (summary)
he wants you to be the author. (Do not need to credit author as you are the author)
-Should be about 1.5 pages.
-Summarize the same points the author makes-giving the same points the same
emphasis as author does.
-first and last sentences are the most important.
-Part Two of the article will be analytical (remember to credit the author on
ideas in this part of
the paper)
-There will be four parts to this half of the paper.
-First part will consist of
-definition of the problem
-state your agreement or disagreement
-2nd part will consist of
-recommendations, short term and long term
-3rd part will consist of
-supporting of recommendations
-what you’ve gotten out of the article
4th part will consist of
-what is the benefit of implementing these
This half should be 1.5 pages.
Resume is also due
-modify the resume to the author’s standards in the textbook
-should be one page
-cover letter to accompany resume

Definition of an Interview
-A face-to-face encounter with a specific objective in mind.
Types of Interviews
Counseling Interview-Individual counsels another, or gives guidance to that
person, on the issues of drugs/alcohol, legal guidance, career, college counseling, et
cetera. More cost-effective to companies.
Employment Interview-P. 259. Where one individual tries to "sell himself"
in order to gain employment.
Exit Interview-An interview that takes place upon termination or exiting of a
Company voluntarily. Most businesses do not take the time to conduct these
interviews (Dr. Tyler).
Grievance Interview-A stressful problem that has evolved which needs higher
level management to intervene. This is the kind of confrontational interview most businesses try to avoid.
Group Interview-Usually a group of panelists facing an individual or
audience, answering questions that are consistently fired at them.
Ways to be successful at a Panel/Group Interview (Dr. Tyler)
-move chair back so you can take in the entire panel which is
interviewing you.
-make eye contact.
-look at other members of the panel and audience.
-bring notepad in order to compose thoughts before answering a
question.
Informational Interview-where person is giving you information that you need
for the project at hand, such as a government briefing on funding, for example.
Interrogation Interview-This can be stressful and antagonistic. Good cop/bad
cop scenario. A good example that was brought up in class was the TV show N.Y.P.D. Blue.
Performance Interview-whose performance is being evaluated "on the job".
-usually happens every three months (or is supposed to).
Things that occur during this interview
1) what are your goals and aspirations for this job?
2) how are you going to achieve them?
3) why are they important?

-describe the standards that your boss has to live up to
-Then describe YOUR job, resources, standards, et cetera, and submit a report
