About Delta Gamma

History Delta Gamma was founded in 1873 on Christmas Eve in Oxford, Mississippi at the Lewis School for Girls.  Eva Webb-Dodd, Anna Boyd-Ellington, and Mary Comfort-Leonard chose the letter "H" as their symbol.  Delta Gamma now stands as one of the largest and most influential fraternities in the country. No Hazing Policy Chapters are not permitted to impose menial or personal tasks or to allow any form of hazing.  Any chapter officer responsible for allowing such activities shall be removed from office. Delta Gamma policy strictly forbids hazing, which is defined as any act or tradition that endangers the physical, mental or emotional well-being of a new member and/or member; requests, encourages or suggests violation or city, county, state or national law; is mentally or physically degrading or required a personal or menial task of a new member and/or memnber, regardless of location, intent or consent or the participants. Examples of hazing include, but are not limited to, embarassig and/or required stunts and costumes; harassing; interrogating; line-ups, scavenger hunts; kidnapping; tuck-ins; personal services; drinking or eating on command, requests or suggestion; deprivation of sleep or food;  authority over new members and/or members; anything that tens to diminish the self-esteem and dignity or categorize the new member and/or member as second-class person. Hazing corrupts the true meaning of fraternity life; it negates the values of loyalty, hope, trust, supportive friendship, kindness, and compassion that Delta Gamma affirms.  The moral integrity of the chapter is inseperable from the conduct of its members.  Because Delta Gamma supports the integrity and dignity of women, basic human rights, decency, honor, gracious living, and positive reinforcement of each other, there is no place for hazing (which is negative and archaic) in our Fraternity of women. Violation of Fraternity's hazing policy by a member or new member will result in a review of new membership or membership by the Honor Board and possible termination or expulsion.

the anchor is the symbol that represents Delta Gamma.

the crest of Delta Gamma has special meaning to its members.  the colors of the crest are Cream, for the rose at the apex of the crest, Gold for the three, five-pointed stars on the shield, the rope around the shield and outline of the scroll ribbon, burtn maize for the flanking ornaments of the rose and the Greek letters, Tau Delta Eta, blue for the lower two-thirds of the shield, green for the upper third and center section of the shield, and the leaves of the rose; and rose for the Greek Letters, Delta Gamma, which appear at the center section.

The Hannah Doll, which resembles a Raggedy-Ann doll, is Delta Gamma's mascot.

the Delta Gamma official colors are bronze, pink, and blue.

Only initiated members wear the official badge of the Fraternity.  In 1877, the "H" badge changed to an anchor, which is the traditional symbol for hope.

Women who are pledged to join but who are not yet initiated wear the new member pin.  The white shield has the Greek Letters, Pi Alpha, inscribed on it.  This shield is the suggested Fraternity badge and will be exchanged for the official badge upon initiation.
