    A. 2000: 75% live in urban area
    B. 25% of children live with 1 parent
    C. 12.7% live in poverty
    D. 20% are barely literate and have trouble with simple documents
    E. since 1980, the prison population has gone from 500,000 to 2 million
    F. Rise of women....
        1. own 30% of all businesses
        2. gains in education

IV. Shifts in Population
    A. migration: mass movement within a country
    B. mid 1800's: move to cities for jobs
    C. 1970's: move to southern and western states
    D. 1980s & 1990s: people flock to suburbs
