SOCIALISM
A. Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto in 1848
    1. seen as basis of sicialist philosophy
    2. Marx envisioned a society of equals without class distinctions.
    3. All poeple contribute to society based on ability to do so, adn take from society only what tehy need.

B. Socialism is based on idea that power and ownsership of society belong to the common people.
    1. the working class (proletariat) should violently revolt.
    2. the capitalist ruling class (bourgeoisie) would be replaced by the state.

C. Socialist Thought
    1. Competition - little real competition exists. Businesses dictate what people buy (advertising).
    2.Private Property- owners use property to take advantage of others.  Govt. counld decide how to use property
        to benefit  many, rather than a few.
   3. Price - control prices to produce equality and protect workers
