Summary

In vivo measurements of the heat convection coefficient for improving radio-frequency cardiac ablation

I am currently developing methods for in vivo measurements of the heat convection coefficient on the endocardial surface for improving radio-frequency cardiac ablation. The method is catheter based and it has been successfully used in preliminary experiments in pigs.

I am improving the calibration process of the instrument. Furthermore, I will perform more in vivo experiments in order to map different regions in the heart. The results will help to optimize numerical methods and, hence, to develop more adequate ablation catheters for the cure of AFIB.

An instrument for in vivo measurements of the heat convection coefficient in the hepatic vessels for improving radio-frequency hepatic ablation.

Our group is developing theoretical equations and numerical simulations for predicting the behavior of the heat convection coefficient in the hepatic vessels. These equations will assist the development of a method for measuring the parameter in vivo.

I will develop an instrument capable of measuring the heat convection coefficient in vivo in the hepatic vessels. The measured parameter will help to develop better techniques in order to create larger lesions close to the vessels. These larger lesions are necessary in order to completely destroy cancer cells in regions close to hepatic vessels.
