BSA Troop 720
Richardson, Texas
BSA Troop 720 has been
around for more than 25 years. We typically have between twenty and forty
boys at a time. We are a boy-led troop. This means that the boys who
hold leadership positions get together in August and plan the entire year's
calendar. Of course, they have to get it approved by
the adults before it is printed and handed out to everyone. They plan
what we do, when we do it, and where we do it; the adults plan out how
to get there.
We also split the boys
into separate patrols, each having at least eight boys in it with a Patrol
Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader. The Senior Patrol Leader is usually
one of the older boys and is in charge of most of what we do (he's under
the advice of the Scoutmaster). He also has an assistant. When
camping, each patrol plans a menu and buys their own food. They cook and
eat separately.
Troop 720 goes camping
once-a-month, except for January and July. In January and the beginning
of February, we have our
fundraiser every year. In June we go on a week-long
canoe trip down the
Buffalo River in northern Arkansas. Because it is
so long, we do not have a campout in July. Some typical campouts are:
backpacking, canoeing, a base-camp, rifle/shotgun shooting
* , and wilderness survival. Every
November, we go to Breckenridge Park in northeastern Richardson.
There we campout and build a 20-30 foot tower out of rope and old telephone
poles. We invite all Webelos to come stay overnight with us to see what
our troop is like camping. The next day, we have a great feast of chili,
cornbread, and pie; all of which the Webelos and adults make.
Our meetings are held
every Monday night from 7:00-8:30 from late July to the end of May.
Contact our Scoutmaster, Jim Talkington, at (972) 644-2949 for more information.
* The rifle/shotgun
campouts are supervised by NRA certified instructors and the other
adults.
