Ulseth Family Connections

The Family From Norway Overview

Ingebrigt and Ingeborg Ulset were the parents of the five brothers who emigrated to the US and Canada after growing up on a farm 'Ulset' in Kvikne. There were 7 children. The two girls, Kjerstine (Simastuen) and Gjertrud (Taksgård) stayed at Kvikne their whole life. The Family left Ulset, and lived a period at Grotlia, Kvikne, where Kjerstine's granddaughter lives today. Later the Ulset Family went to the neighbour community, Oppdal. From Oppdal the five brothers left for the US and Canada. Before the emigration, Even met Anne Holen from Dovre, the neighbour community south of Oppdal. She became his wife. Their oldest child, a daughter Ingeborg, was born in Norway, and was only 4 months old at the emigration in 1882. Her christian name was shortened to "Inga". Ole Ulseth was the second one from the family who left Norway in 1888. Iver went far up north in Norway, to Bardu, where he met Ingeborg Karoline whom he married. This couple, too, had children in Norway. One, Marit (Mary Radford), was christened in Bardu, the other, Ingebrigt Einar (Emery), in Oppdal. Early one morning in 1893, Kristoffer left his home with a horse conveyance from Kvikne. An interview Chris gave to a local newspaper in Kvikne in 1954 at his visit, indicates so. We also believe that his mother, Ingeborg, moved back to Kvikne about that time. Martin was the last of the brothers to leave in 1896 with his wife Anne in Oppdal and her realtives still live there.

They used the surname Ulset before the emigration and changed it to Ulseth when settling in the US. In the book we use both Ulset and Ulseth depending on telling the story before or after the emigration.
