My Great-grandmother

CHRISTINE LARSSON-SANDEEN, 03/05/1862 - 04/20/1961.

She was baptized Kjerstin but called Stina in Sweden. She was born in Haga, Nås and died in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Lars and Margreta (Hallvardsdotter) Pehrsson. Margreta was Lars' second wife. Christine was married 12/23 1883 to Ola Nilsson-Sandén. He was born 11/29 1853 in Södra Sandby, Skåne and died in Oklee, Minnesota. His parents were Nils and Bengta (Påhlsdotter) Nilsson. Nils was a farmer or sharecropper in Södra Sandby. In the US Kjerstin and Ola changed the spelling of their surname to Sandeen and her name to Christine.

In her youth, Christine learned dressmaking at the Backmanska School in Hedemora. Her skill in that craft served her well in later years when she was responsible for clothing her nine children adequately.

According to his granddaughter, Orpha Gray, Ola and brother Jons attended the University of Lund where Ola graduated from the teaching faculty. In 1879, he moved to Björbo in Floda, Dalarna, where he was hired as a teacher on a temporary basis. Subsequently he moved to Grangårde where he served in various village schools, among them Morberget and Sunnansjö. His permanent post was in Morberget where the family lived.

When and how Christine and Ola met is not known, but they were married in Hedemora and then settled in Morberget. There, their children Bettie, Evald and Emil were born. Alida was born in her grandparents home in Lassbo, Hedemora where Christine stayed prior to delivery.

Ola's brother Jöns had emigrated to the USA in 1882. He strongly suggested that Ola and his family also should leave Sweden and seek their fortune in America. He told them that free and fertile farmland awaited them in Minnesota and promised that everything would be arranged for them when they arrived. Ola was easily convinced, but Christine was sceptical and wanted to remain in Sweden.

Christine and Ola had nine children: Bettie (1885), Alida (1886), Evald (1887), Emil (1890), William (1892), Harold (1896), Helen (1899), Helga (1901) and Viola (1904). In spite of the family's hardships and meager circumstances, the children received a good upbringing in religious spirit and became upright and industrious folk.
