Paintings

The word totem comes from the Anishinabek (Ojibway) word Dodem that means clan. Totem figures are not objects of worship but are artworks and insignia. Totems tell stories and marking events and places. Totems also show the signs of the Greatness of the Creator and remind us that we all have One Creator. Though the origin of the word totem comes from the East Coast and the Woodlands Native culture most totem carvings come from the West Coast Native culture. All Native Nations in Turtle Island (America) are divided into several cultures depending on the different regions. The Arctic and Sub Arctic cultures are in the North, the Woodlands culture stretches from the East Coast woodlands region to the central plains region where the Plains culture begins. Southwest of the plains is the dry region of the Southwest culture. Just like in the Woodlands culture, cultures of the East Coast, the Plains and other regions also have the clan system division of duties in their societies. For its insignia, every clan has a figure of an animal associated with the duties that the clan performs. The Eagle Clan members for example are always the spiritual leaders where the eagle, known for flying at the highest levels, represents virtues such as the highest elevation of the soul.
