Chapter 42

Catlyn pulled into the driveway just as Nick and Kyndall were getting out of his truck. She watched as Nick stumbled over a crack in the sidewalk, and Kyndall helped keep him from falling. They were laughing and smiling. A twinge of jealousy coursed through her as she seen Nick hug Kyndall tightly before they walked into the apartment. "What the fuck does it matter to me," she mumbled to herself as she parked her car. "I don't want him." But she knew that wasn't true. And the more she seen him, the more she talked to him, the more she learned about him, the more she wanted him. Sighing, she climbed out of her car, locking the door behind her.

"Hey Cat," Kyndall greeted her as she walked in the door.

"Heya," Catlyn smiled. Completely ignoring Nick who was sitting on the couch, she walked to her room.

She heard Nick ask Kyndall what was wrong, and her Kyndall say she had no idea. Their voices became muffled background noise as she turned on her stereo and laid down on her bed. Catlyn was still trying to sort through her feelings about AJ and whether or not she really should help him out with Kyndall. She closed her eyes, her foot tapping in time to the beat of KoRn, singing along quietly, her mind racing. She was lost in the sound of Jonathan's voice singing loudly next to her.

o~/I tell my lies and you despise every second I'm with you/So I run away and you still stay so what the fuck is with you/Your feelings I can't help but rape them/I'm sorry/I don't feel the same/My heart inside is constantly hating/I'm sorry/I just throw you away/~o

Catlyn was so engrossed in her music and thoughts that she didn't hear the knocking at her door until it started shaking. Jumping up, she turned the music down and opened it to find Nick standing there. "Ya know, I like KoRn just as much as the next person, but really," he said shaking his head.

"What do you want?" she asked looking up at him.

"To say hello and see if you wanted to do something tonite."

"Don't you have a girlfriend you should be bothering?" Catlyn asked walking over and sitting down on her bed.

"Yeah, well, she's out with some of her friends," he shrugged. Looking around her room, he was a little surprised to see some sketches and drawing hanging up here and there. "Who did these?" he asked looking closely at them. They were various fantasy pictures: dragons, wizards, demons, fairies, and various other mystical creatures.

"Umm, I did," she said leaning over and turning down the volume on her CD player a little more.

He looked at her, surprised, and impressed. "Wow. These are awesome. Especially this one," he said standing in front of the only colored picture she had. It was an elven princess, shackled to an altar. There were two lizard-men type creatures standing guard over her. The room they were in was circular, a large void in the center. In this void, a five headed dragon was rising up, smoke and darkness swirling around it.

"Oh, that," she said softly. "That is a replication of Clyde Caldwell's 'Dragons of Triumph' from the DragonLance books."

He nodded. "It looks identical to the original. That is awesome." He walked over and sat next to her on the bed. "You are quiet talented," he commented.

"Umm…thanks," Catlyn said looking away. She was suddenly very uncomfortable, and she knew it was because he was so close to her. "So, umm…what did you and Kyndall do today?" she asked quickly, standing up and walking over to her closet.

Looking at her strangely, Nick shrugged. "We talked a bit and went out to eat. What's the matter?" he asked suddenly.

"What do you mean?" she smiled over at him.

"You suddenly don't seem to want to have anything to do with me. Did I make you mad or something?" he asked, confused.

Laughing, Catlyn shook her head. "No. You didn't make me mad at you, silly man. Let's go play some ball," she said tossing the basketball at him.

As they walked over to the courts, Catlyn looked at Nick. "Ya know, AJ and Howie want me to help them get Kyndall and AJ back together," she commented squinting up at the sky.

"Hmm," he murmured. "And are you?"

She shrugged. "I don't know. I just…it's hard for me to believe that AJ has changed, ya know?"

Nick nodded as he dribbled the ball. "Me too. I kind of wish that…well, that she'd get over him and look for someone else."

Catlyn looked at him funny. "Like who?"

He shrugged. "I don't know," he said taking a shot and missing. "Howie?"

She ran over and retrieved the ball, taking a shot. "Yeah. That would be cool, cept he'd never let her. He knows that she's completely hooked on J."

They played a couple of games of basketball, talking about AJ and Kyndall. All the time they were talking and playing, Nick's thoughts were on Catlyn and what it was that was making her so distant to him. Catlyn's thoughts were on Nick and how she had to be careful or she'd completely fall for him.
