The Standard poodle is the oldest of the three Poodle breeds which are the Standard, Miniature and the Toy Variety. The Standard is known in Russia and Germany since the early 16th century. Though its first job was that of a retriever of waterfowl, the versatile Poodle was used in France to scent out truffles, a mushroom like delicacy. The breeds sense of fun and high trainability made it popular as a circus dog by the end of the 18th century.
The Standard is versatile, intelligent and quick to please which makes them excellent companions. They do require exercise and are generally more suited to a household than a highrise. Averaging in height at 22 - 26 inches at the withers, the Standard Poodle possesses a non-shedding coat that is dense, harsh and frizzy or curly. Their coat comes in any solid colour and is one of the most extensively groomed breeds. Poodles require a skilled hand to clip and scissor. Regular brushing and combing is an absolute must.
