Goalball | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Hanz Lorenzen and a German, Sepp Reindle first invented Goalball as a method to helping the rehabilitation of blind war veterans in 1946. In 1976, the game was first played in the Paraylmpics in Toronto, Canada and has become a very popular sport for the visually impaired. Many people have described Goalball as a mixture between bowling and soccer. The object of the game is to roll the ball, using a bowling motion, to the opposing side in attempts to score a goal by crossing the goal line. The defending team must defend the Goalball and prevent the ball from crossing their goal line by lying on the court and using their body in a defensive manner. |

Goalball is played on a rectangular court, which is 18 meters in length and 9 meters in width. The court is divided into two halves by a centerline. (Dimensions of the court) Player orientation lines are designated on the court by using court tape and regular twine. The game is played with a specialized bell ball. Each team consists of 3 members, 1 center and 2 wing players and a maximum of 3 substitutes on each team. Each member on the court must wear eyeshades at all times while on the court. Elbow and kneepads should also be worn for safety.
The game consists of two 10-minute halves and one three-minute half time. Each goal counts as one point. Each team is allowed 3 time outs, 45 seconds in length. The offensive team is only allowed 10 seconds to throw the ball back to the opposing team after they defend the ball on their side of the court. A referee is used in the game to keep the players informed on what is going on in the game and keep the game in control. The referee will make loud and clear calls to inform the teams when the ball is in play, when the ball is out of bounds or when a point is scored. There are a total of four line callers at each corner of the court to help bring the ball back into play after it has been out of bounds or has scored a point.
