 1813Battle of Frenchtown. Kentuckians under General Winchester defeated by British-Canadians.
 1849British capture fortress of Multan from Sikhs.
 1879Battle of Isandhlwana. Zulus overwhelmed and massacred British 24th Regiment -- one of the British army's worse disasters.
 1879Battle of Rorke's Drift in the Zulu War begins. 137 British hold off several thousand Zulus. The garrison was awarded eleven Victoria Crosses and nine Distinguished Conduct Medals.
 1942Japanese capture Rabul, New Britain, and massacre many of the Australian defenders.
