 1879Second day of the Battle of Rorke's Drift in the Zulu War. 45 British hold off several thousand Zulus.
 1943Combined Australian and American forces capture Sanananda, ending the Battle of the Kokoda Trail. Over the course of the battle, outnumbered 2:1, Australians killed 16,000 Japanese.
 1944Allies land at Anzio, Italy.
